Hi guys

I just had a thought of possibly compiling a list of (parts only) which you have replaced on your Gen 1 FJR . I'm not talking here about normal maintenance stuff (plugs, oil filters, tires etc) but parts on your Gen 1 that have broken through wear and tear over it's lifetime. I only thought the Gen 1 bike because i have one, and they are the oldest model. Would it be worth while having this information available to everyone ?? Or wouldn't there be much of a list anyway??. Speaking for myself and my gen 1 having now done 75k i have only had to replace the cam chain tensioner. Your thoughts??

TPS

Cam Chain Tensioner

Radiator (rock, not wear)

Cylinder head

Intake/Exhaust cams

16 valves

springs

keepers, shims, bearings, et al

Front springs

Rear shock

OEM heated grips 3 times, throttle grip breaks wires (very low cost to repair, wiring and controller already installed)

(universal joint is going click, click, click -- needs to be looked at)

Fuel Injection supplemented by PC III due to wicked surging

Seat, factory seat not effective for long days

I'll concede that being one of the first FJR owners to experience a cam chain tensioner that failed led to the cylinder head and parts. As a follower you avoided this costly adventure by being pre-warned to change the CCT and later Yamaha did change the design. Sometimes it's expensive to be a leader.

'05 currently at a hair over 75k miles.

TPS (under recall. Had not failed)

CCT (preventively due to the above leader showing us the way)

Front springs (replaced by prior owner. Assume this was a performance enhancement since it was at <10k miles)

Rear shock (performance upgrade @65k miles. The old one didn't fail. In fact it is back on the bike right now while the Penske gets some love in Oregon)

IOW, I have had no failures of any parts. Knock on wood!

Front wheel bearings

rear shock.. (not wore out , just an upgrade)

Clutch friction plates (slipping)

Mine is an 03 with 148000kms.

And what Bounce said below..

Suspension (upgraded)

Did the CCT boogie and the WynPro block off plate tango, & radiator cap. The WynPro plates are the best bang

for the $$$$$, one can actually see WTF when raising the tank to do TBS & replace plugs. 29,000 on a 2004

that had 4950 when I bought it in Jan 2011.

04 150,000km

Ticker fixed by Yamaha at 40,000km, changed the CCT/Timing chain as a preventative measure at the same time.

Wheel bearings (preventative) & Brakes F/R at 110,000km

Suspension upgrade Cogent/Ohlins

Tires/Plugs/Air Cleaner/2 Batteries

Otherwise, no failures of any kind. <touch wood>.

03 new in July of 02

Ticker fix before it became popular.

Bevel gear seal twice under waranty

Insturment display under waranty.

CCT twice. One homade manual and one blue dot.

Rebuilt the starter at 114k

Other than that the rest is upgrades.

Front wheel bearings (because of new wheel... not because they went bad)

Rear shock linkage

Rear Shock

Fork Springs

Rubber Pads on foot pegs (only because I stand on them constantly & wear them out. Actually, due for a side swap because they're wearing again)

Tick fixed/new exhaust valves (forgot mileage)

2 of my panels on right side of bike have stress cracks in them. Not sure if it's from over torquing them or if they're just old.

Cam Chain & Tensioner

Tires.... lots of tires

91K miles

Relay arm bearings, rear shock, Seat and windshield (rider choice, not worn out), CCT (preventive), TPS (recall), a few headlight bulbs, one battery, some brake pads and about 16 tires.

Everything between the tank, swing arm, foot pegs and radiator.
I was following the "bar" that Ionbeam had set.

Jeez, Howie, you mean you didn't replace the radiator?

  • Front Eibach springs & Emulators
  • Fork seal replaced several times
  • Fork bushings
  • Ohlins rear shock (Serviced once)
  • Steering head bearings
  • Relay arm bearing bushings
  • Swingarm bearing & bushings
  • Front wheel bearings
  • Rear Subframe broke and repaired
  • TPS - still working but replaced because of recall
  • Rear drive shaft seals
  • Plastic bushing/spacers for winshield arms
  • Headlight and signal light bulbs

That's just about it.

- replaced front springs and rear spring coil @ 75K it was getting pretty mushy

- shimmed one valve and replaced CCT & chain @ 84K CCT was about done and pretty weak

- replaced bushings & bearings in center bolt of relay arm @ 117K original had to be ground out it was so bad, the other two were fine

- finally replaced OEM seat @ 117K no way I was going to pretend to be a tough guy with that torture device anymore

- replaced head bearings @ 117K

- rebuilt front brake calipers @ 117K I had no idea just how bad the originals were hanging up until I did this

All other bearings, bushings, gears and whatnot seem to be just fine. I'm as happy as a muskie in a bait tank with this bike.

Tps by PO, repaired ignition switch last month, failure.while sitting at a red light .

gen II shock added as upgrade last month.

I have had it since last June ,and about 6 K miles, so not a whole year yet :)
