Heading to Raleigh, NC looking for trip planning help

I have a 2 week training course near Raleigh Sept 7 - 20 and plan to take the FJR. I am looking for recommended roads in that area for weeknight riding. On the Sept 14-15 weekend I plan to head over to Cherokee and do the Dragon, Snake, Cherohala, etc, etc.

I also wanted to see the Wheels through Time museum but just found out that there is a 'Thunder in the Smokies' rally and wonder what effect that will have on traffic in the area. I am afraid that riding will be restricted if I have to follow a bunch of cruisers through those twistie roads.

Anyway looking for any advice those familiar with the area might have. Be gentle, I know I am a FNG and that this is Friday!

Of course you could always make the two hour ride down to Wrightsville Beach. Shouldn't be too busy and the water will still be warm.

Whatever you do, watch out for deer. They're f**king everywhere (sometimes literally).
