Cleaning under the gas cap

I saw a breakdown of how to disassemble the gas cap flange for cleaning but don't remember where I saw it.can Someone tell me what’s involved?

Well, it was about a bit more than just cleaning, but I made a post about castration of the cap's check valve a few years back.

FWIW my neutered cap has functioned perfectly since then.

It's good to look in there. I found corrosion under mine.

People may want to look under the cap assembly to see how much dirt (how many pounds of dirt!) has been sucked in from the tank vent and do a little house keeping. I wonder if Dirt Road DCarver has looked under his gas cap to see what the tank vent has sucked in With no fuel filter and only a little sock on the fuel pickup line in the tank why tempt fate?

Yep! My corrosion started crawling up to where I could see it on my tank on the edge of the filler assembly. Thank God I was a corrosion control specialist in the Navy. I got it taken care of but, it was a lot of work. You all should look in there. It'll save you the price of a new tank.

I did this on my '05 a few weeks ago when we actually got some rain. Bike sits outside at work during the day so I started thinking about the drain hole. No corrosion on mine but plenty of dirt and grit in there... all clean now, no worries.

I'm sure that's true. I'm 20 minutes from the beach. I pay dearly for my thrills!
