new oil filter design

I recently learned Yamaha has now gone to a smaller oil filter for the Fjr. Anyone know why?

They can get more of them in a shipping container for the boat ride from Japan.

I just traveled over to NEPRT, home of all things oil, tires, gas & spark plugs and found that we were discussing this very thing just a day or two ago. This is what we had to say.

Yes, the old filters were too big and filtering too much oil too well. With the smaller filters, the engines will get less oil to the important parts and wear faster. This will help Yamaha sell more motorcycles because their engines will stop lasting 300,000 plus miles.

It's all about money with some people.

The first thing that came to mind is Yamaha is increasing thier bottom line.

And, making the FJR lighter too. The money and weight savings from a smaller oil filter is probably staggering
