I'm sick of the same old heading out west, so plan on heading east for a bike trip in the next couple of months. It will be 7-10 days, probably 400 miles a day, (my buddy is on a Harley), and I'm looking for ideas from folks that live in the Southeast.

Have to do:

  • Dragon (he's not going if we don't)
  • An overnight in Pensacola (high school buddy just moved there)
Interested in doing:

  • Natchez Trace
  • Blue Ridge Parkway
We're in the Austin area, and I'm just looking to string together some good sights on a big loop. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Spend a night at Two Wheels of Suches. Iconic motorcycle crowd in an iconic motorcycle setting.

Sights? Check a tourist website.

Fun roads? Any small road within the area where these towns are the corners:

Chatsworth, GA

Rosman, NC

Sparta, NC

Johnson City, TN

Also look here.

The Dragon is fun. Just because there are plenty of less traveled roads that are just as good ride wise doesn't mean it isn't a mecca for a lot of motorcyclists. It's more enjoyable early in the morning, or on a weekday, as midday and afternoon on weekends, it's predictably congested. Better to ride off hours. More seeing and being seen during weekend peak. The roads you have listed are great- but I'll second Hud- lots of good roads in his post, and the Wolf Pen Gap loop is pretty nice. I need to go out west. I've never been west of Arkansas unless I was headed to LA on a plane.

I thought I saw a notice of there being work done along the Dragon at the end of April so just a heads up on that. Not sure when you were planning on going.

Dragon sucks if it is crowded. I prefer the Cherohala Skyway instead.
JMO,

Dave
Not only sucks on weekends but can be down right dangerous. Go during midweek in the AM. Cherohala is great about anytime. Blue Ridge Parkway is beautiful but slow. Cops catch you speeding, it can be spendy.....Natchez Trace likewise. Might want to check out Pensacola closer. Great beaches and the Naval Museum is pretty kool.

From Austin:

1. Head east northeast and ride through Davy Crocket, Sam Rayburn, and Toledo Bend reservoirs.

2. Call Pants.

3. Crossover into central Louisiana at meet Pants at the border.

4. Have Pants escort you though the best roads in central Louisiana (not great, but not bad). Wave bye bye to Pants

5. Run (stop?) through Vicksburg/Natchez and some pretty decent stuff in central Mississippi.

6. Work in a few sections of the Natchez trace. After 25 miles of HEAVILY ENFORCED 50 mph speed limit, it gets boring. Let Pants suggest a couple of sections that are worth riding, and include interesting stops to see.

7. Stop and call FJRBandit.

8. Crossover into north central Alabama and meet FJR Bandit at the border.

9. Have Bandit escort you through the best roads in central and northeastern Alabama (Talledega Scenic Byway, for sure). Wave bye bye to Bandit.

10. Call Uncle Hud.

11. Take the Little Grand Canyon into north Georgia and greet Hud at the border.

11. Have Hud escort you through North Georgia for at least 2 days (stay at TWO). Doesn't matter which road you take - they are all good. Wave bye bye to Hud. Hold it - maybe not.... Hud's retired, he may keep going. Let's call that "optional".

12. Head toward Deal's Gap.

13. If you insist, ride The Dragon. Get your sticker. Bla Bla Bla

14. Use the Blue Ridge Parkway as a general guide to head northeast. But like the Natcez Trace, pick your spots. Mt. Mitchell is a must (highest point on the parkway). Many other places northeast of there, but how far you go depends on how much time you have.

15. Other things worth seeing in the 2-5 days you could spend in that entire region are: Roan Mtn, Hot Springs and the entire French Broad River region, Grandfather Mtn (if you find yourself near there, do NOT pass this up. Give them the $20.00 a head to get in and say thank you), etc. I could go on for this agenda item for 1000 words. I know of hundreds of miles of incredible roads that you could ride and NEVER hit the same one twice. We can expand on this one later.

16. When you are done with the Appalacians, start heading generally West. Again, depending on where you are, I can steer you to some good stuff to hit on the way back. Cumberland Gap, great riding in southeast Kentucky, for example. Also not quite as good, but very decent riding and scenic farmland in eastern and middle Tennessee.

17. Stop in Arkansas for 1-5 days. Again, depending on timing and your thinking, as well as your interests (besides riding), I can help you with some ideas here. If not much time, stay south of I-40 and hit Nebo, Magazine, Petit Jean, and Talamena. If more time, run farther north to the roller coasters in the Ozarks.

18. Run through Broken Bow, OK on the way home.

19. Arrive safely at home.

Now then, what I have outlined can be 7 or 70 days. It can be 2,500 or 12,500 miles.

Happy Planning!!

Ok, I'll address the second must do. You will have plenty of info from the other guys on the Appalachian Mountain area.

Coming into Pensacola from the west you can do the Ferry. The Mobile Bay Ferry brings you across the bay. What's better then you and your bike on a boat? Then you can ride part of the gulf coast of Florida. The Panhandle beaches of Florida are by far the most scenic. While curvy roads are what we all crave on our bikes, don't discount a nice ride on a coastal road. The curves will not be heart pounding and the speeds might be slow, but just get in the rhythm and soak it all in. Stop for a swim, eat some seafood, look at the sights.

You could leave Pensacola and head east for a day or so. First go south out of Pensacola and ride SR399. Then just follow US98 east.

In a few places US98 leaves the beach and you need to be on HWY 30 or 30A. Just ride and stop at any beach access that looks good.

If you like State Parks Grayton Beach and St George Island are not to be missed.

Once you hit Panama City you could take US231 up through Alabama and pick up around #8 in Pant's post above.

Have to do:

  • Dragon (he's not going if we don't)
  • An overnight in Pensacola (high school buddy just moved there)

More Dragon:

Consider spending a night at the DG resort (https://www.dealsgap.com/) When I go, don't care as much actually riding the Dragon because as has been said above - at times it's crazy & dangerous, heavily enforced, and there are many great, lesser known roads in the area.

But the resort is a blast IMO. It's everything motorcycle and fun just hanging out. Get a room and take a seat by the campfire at night. The rooms are very reasonable the last time I stayed there (~$65). This also allows you to pick the ideal time to actually ride the Dragon, and maybe do the loop back via Cherohala.

I was at the resort a few yrs ago during a 2 stroke meet/event. Mostly Kawasaki 3 cylinder bikes stock and modified, but also some Yamaha RDs and Suzuki Titans. You never know what's going to be there when you show up.

Note, if you do decide to stop there and enjoy an adult beverage at night around the campfire, pack it in. This is both a dry county and miles from the nearest store. The restaurant does have a beer licence, but they close at 5 or so.

For the record, I am NOT retired. Not even close, thanks to a divorce. Retired guys who can ride all the f****ing time, whenever and wherever ....... probably like the OP ....... they really piss me off.

Truth? Natchez Trace and the Parkway are slow and well-enforced. Scenery's nice on both, however.

Thanks for all the info, fellas! I have reached my limit of likes for the day, (why is there a limit?), but I appreciated them all. Great stuff!

Hud - Not retired at all. 56, and thanks to the purchase of a new shanty last year, and a pool the missus insisted on, prolly on the clock for another 6-7.

Pants - Well done. Very well done. I'm actually starting to think that we can focus on the western North Carolina/eastern TN area and knock out a lot of good riding, all in one spot. I had been thinking about heading to FL first, then north, but might go north first, and swing south on the way home. I'm going to run some ideas by my riding buddy, and see if I can get my friend in Pensacola out on his bike for a few days. Their responses will give me a bit more of a direction.

Found a couple of decent websites that are helping out; anyone use these:

I've been to the dragon more than a dozen times in the last 10 years. Mid week is always the best. But! having said that , 2 years ago ,Moosehead , Canadian FJR and myself rent a room at The Deals Gap Inn. It way the July 1st weekend. NOBODY was there. Ha ha ha . Everyone must have thought it was going to be a zoo and stayed away. We ran up and down the dragon like we owned it.i kid you not. We ran as many roads as we could . It was awesome.

Enjoy your trip, look around , have fun.

Yeah, I was thinking- Hud ain't retired. Regarding the Dragon- I've been meaning to get a hotel instead of driving in and back in a day. There's a Microtel we pass on the way in. Might check out the DG though.

I for one love the Dragon, not only the road, but the whole experience. I think my wife and I have been for about 5 years in a row. I have never stayed at the Resort, it looks like it would be fun. However I have to say I am partial to this place.

Iron Horse in Stecoah. It's about 45 minutes from the Dragon. It's a nice ride and perfect warm up for the Dragon.
