Standard key registration:

Standard key registration is required when a standard key is lost and needs to be replaced, or when the code re-registering key is re-registered after the immobilizer unit or ECU are replaced.

TIP

Do not start the engine with a standard key that has not been registered. If the main switch is turned to “ON” with a standard key that has not been registered, the immobilizer system indicator light flashes to indicate fault code number “52”. (Refer to “SELF-DIAGNOSIS FAULT CODE INDICATION” on page 8-126.)

1. Check that the immobilizer system indicator light signals the standby mode.

2. Using the code re-registering key, turn the main switch to “ON”, then “OFF”, and then remove the key within 5 seconds.

3. Insert the first standard key to be registered into the main switch, then turn the key to “ON” within 5 seconds to activate the key registration mode.

TIP

The existing standard key code is erased from the memory when the key registration mode is activated. When the key registration mode is activated, the immobilizer system indicator light flashes rapidly.

4. While the indicator light is flashing, turn the main switch to “OFF”, remove the key, and within 5 seconds, insert the second standard key to be registered into the main switch.

TIP

If the immobilizer system indicator light stops flashing 5 seconds after the first standard key is registered, the registration mode is deactivated. If this occurs, the second standard key cannot be registered, and steps 2 to 4 need to be repeated to register both standard keys.

5. Turn the main switch to “ON”.

TIP

When the indicator light goes off, the registration is complete.
6. Check that the engine can be started with the two registered standard keys.

Item 1 merely means the immobiliser light is doing its periodic flash showing that the ignition has been on within the last 24 hours.

Never use the red key to run the bike. If you lose this, you will need a new ECU. I would strongly advise getting a second black key (it will cost a lot, but a small fraction of the cost of an ECU).

Here's the instruction for registering the new key. Note that you will have to register both standard (black) keys or the original one will not work after.

Standard key registration:
Standard key registration is required when a standard key is lost and needs to be replaced, or when
the code re-registering key is re-registered after the immobilizer unit or ECU are replaced.
NOTE:
Do not start the engine with a standard key that has not been registered. If the main switch is turned
“ON” with a standard key that has not been registered, the immobilizer system indicator light flashes to
indicate fault code “52”. (Refer to “SELF-DIAGNOSIS FAULT CODE INDICATION” on page 8-107.)
1. Check that the immobilizer system indicator light signals the standby mode.
2. Using the code (Red key) re-registering key, turn the main switch to “ON”, then “OFF”, and then remove the
key within 5 seconds.
3. Insert the first standard key to be registered into the main switch, then turn the key to “ON” within 5
seconds to activate the key registration mode.
NOTE:
The existing standard key code is erased from the memory when the key registration mode is activated.
When the key registration mode is activated, the immobilizer system indicator light flashes rapidly.
4. While the indicator light is flashing, turn the main switch to “OFF”, remove the key, and within 5 seconds,
insert the second standard key to be registered into the main switch.
NOTE:
If the immobilizer system indicator light stops flashing 5 seconds after the first standard key is registered,
the registration mode is deactivated. If this occurs, the second standard key cannot be registered,
and steps 2 to 4 need to be repeated to register both standard keys.
5. Turn the main switch to “ON”.
NOTE:
When the indicator light goes off, the registration is complete.
6. Check that the engine can be started with the two registered standard keys.

Thanks for the info from my posting, I'll give it a try over the next day or so and let you know how it goes. It sounds fairly simple so will give it a try. The couple of replies that say they don't have a "Red Key" are wrong it mentions it in the hand book and I got one Red and one Black key with the bike. The previous owner said don't lose it as it'll cost you a fortune to get a CPU and new key plus dealer costs to get it reprogrammed.

OP

US and perhaps other countries do not have immobilizer, therefore no RED Key.

Waiting for the red lamp to flash is the trick to programming, and you must do both black keys, one after the other, in the same session.

Then put that RED key away somewhere safe. New key/ecu is upwards of C$1000.00.
