Arrgghh, my 2004 baseplate for the topcase has the initial cracks and needs to be replaced. Here are photos of what to look for to see if yours has the cracks that can lead to the topcase coming off:

The pen points to the edge of the plastic for a general orientation. I have a similar crack on the right side, too.

You have to look REAL close to see the cracks with the naked eye. They almost look like just gray scratches. However, on the hidden side they are much longer:

Just checked mine and don't have any cracks ('05 model), but I remember reading that Mama Yamma was recalling these mounting plates. Do you have to have a failed one or can they be got proactively under the recall?

Isn't the weight limit of what you're allowed to pack in a top case (per MamaYama) like 8 lbs or something silly?

Maybe the really meant that.

Actually, I read somewhere that it crops up more for bikes with the box totally unloaded. I tend to go both extremes, usually riding nearly empty but sometimes stuffed with the laptop, bag, and papers.

The recall is for Australians (so far) and Jan 2006 or newer.
