A couple of days ago I came back from a great day of riding and went to put the bike on the center stand and SNAP, down goes the bike onto it's right side. The stand broke on the left foot of the center stand. There is no sign of rust anywhere around the break, it just looks like the part failed and tore right off the main arm. I had the side bags on so theres damage to the main right side fairing, the side bag, and the turn signal is broken. It's a 03 with only 18.000 km on it and always kept inside. Could I get a responce from others that have had this problem please. I'm going to be talking to Yamaha about this and I would like to have as much info on this failure as possible.

thanks

Mac,

I have an '03 and so far so good and have not heard of this issue with others. Do you have a YES program active. This would probably cover this.

Good Luck and hope you get a good resolution.

A small number of '03 models did have a problem with the center stand breaking; all later years have a revised stand. Unfortunately, it looks like you are one of the chosen few  Your problem is not unique, hopefully the dealer will work with you on this problem. After a quick search it looks like most of the info on this problem was covered on the EZ Board. Since the EZB was hacked all the history there is probably lost.

Edit: Did another search and found these two threads which covers the problem, the first thread offers a good link: Thread #1 and Thread #2

Mac,

Seems like I read about this happening to some '03s some time ago - never had any problem with mine - yet!!

I superman my sidestand all the time......never fails. Sucks to be you. I'd bitch and moan to the dealer iffn I was you.

Well folks I talked to Yamaha Canada today and they said they would not pay for the repairs. The excuse they used is the following:

"The technicians said that the stand probably started breaking a while ago and the bike would have started to lean because of the part starting to break. I should have seen this happening and gotten it fixed before the final break and the bike falling."

My responce was: "WHAT"............... You've got to be kidding me! Are you actually going to use that as the reason for not fixing my bike? They said yes and they are sticking with that reasoning. The bike is out of warranty and it's not their problem.

I mentioned to him that the 2004 and 2005 center stand is exactly the same as the 03 except for an extra support gusset that they added in the area of the breakage so they knew of the problem but decided not to do anything about it such as a recall. He said yes that was true. but they stand by their decission.

Looks like small claim court is in my future

A lawyer is probably going to cost you more than the repairs. Sorry to hear that happened though, sucks....

You don't happen to live anywhere close to NJ do you? Garauld would be a good contact, his paint work is superb.

A call to University Motors in fargo may also be in your future. umotors

Edit* Just noticed the CANADA part.... Don't know if shipping across the border costs much more, worth a look though.

Sometimes just getting a lawyer to draft a letter shakes things loose. I don't recall any of those posts on the old EZ board mentioning any noticeable leaning before the centerstands failed. Affidavitts from owners whose centerstand failed and the lack of warning could help your position with Yamaha. If anyone had a failure and would post up, it could help should Mac need to conact you. Just my 2 cents.

FJR_MAC I recently have had some problems with my FJR, nothing to do with the centerstand though. I called this person who is a Yamaha Product Specialist, his name is Steve Hamilton and his number is

1-800-962-7926. He helped me out hopefully he may be able to do the same for you. Oh, when you call just tell the operator you need to speak to him. What do you have to loose? I'd give it a shot.

Good Luck. C1
