My CAl 24 report and ride from STL.

Left on sunday afternoon 06/04 early afternoon heading on I-44 west. By the time I got to the MO. OK. border the temp was around 101. Rode to Weatherford OK and stoppped for the evening. I am in pusuit of the IBA national parks tour so in the morning I got off interstate and headed north west to Cheyenne OK. and the Washita Nat. Battlefield and got my stamp. I did this early so to avoid the heat. Got on hwy 60 west to TX. state line. cut off 60 onto 152 for stamps at Lake Meridith and Albetes flint quarrys. Score got them both but by this time it was close to noon about 102 deg. and I wanted to get to Sante fe Nat. Monument near Sante Fe NM. but checking Gps out me there at least 1/2 an hour late so I took a break at DQ had a bite and just hung out as it was now 104 outside. Well got bored with that and headed out in the heat. About two hours later I see the sign that says Mountain Time Zone Sh@t I could have made it I didint factor in time zone. O well to late now after stopping I am stiil screwed. So I head for Grant NM. and stay for the night.

Get up now Tuesday morning and head for El Morro Nat. Monument get that stamp just as the office opens. From there go to hwy 60 west to AZ. 60 west to 61 North to Petrified National Forrest Scored got two stamps they also had the Painted Desert stamp. Ok now west to Walnut Canyon and Sunset Crater Nat. Monument.

It was a good day for stamps I also trie for hoover Dam but arrived after the visitor center had closed. So I headed north past LasVegas to Beatty NV and stayed there that night.

Got up Wed. Morning and headed northwest to CA trying to get to Yosimite. Rode up 395 north arriving at Hwy 120 only to find it still covered in snow not open yet. So I headed farther north and crossed the Sierra Nevadas on hwy 108 Sonora pass wowwwww what a road great ride. Then headed south to San Franciso To visit brother and wife and new kid.

Rest a couple days great.

Head out Friday morning to Dunnigan and the CAL 24 Rally. ( my first rally experience). I was well prepared I read all the info I had over and over bike is set up and ready Maps,Firstaid kit and alll neccessary gear. So I get to Dunnigan and arrive at hotel FJR'S everywere. Go in to check in and get tec inspection. Think Iam ready ( what an idiot) Tech inspector starts going through list gloves coat boots all good First aid kit I say Ill get it and of course it is in the very last compartment I look in. But I have it. Ok the bike tires good headlites signals good ok Brake lights he says then he says brake lites again and I say Oh Sh@t no brake lites I have been riding about 2600 mile so far and no freakin brake lites that sucks. So I think Iam screwed and no rally for me but calm down collect thoughts what could it be ? Oh no horn either. Check fuses ones blown Instant relief just put in the spare turn key and pop it blows oh Sh@t I dont have many extra whats up. Horns are out to check them. hey looke here the horns are grounding out on the radiator gaurd just a little tweak new fuse in and brake lites and horn Kick Ass Iam back in. Go to tech inspector blow horn show brake lites and Iam good to go.

Go to rider meating and take notes try to figur whats up.

Get some sleep.

600 AM up get awake load bike and be ready to get rally pack. Got to rally headquarters get rally pack and head to hotel room.

I wasnt sure were to start so I got out paper map and highlited entire route and then started Identifieying bonuses and sort of picked a route other than then suggested one. First rode to a cemetary and collected that bonus. Had a couple more stops for bonuses and then to the first check point. Jumped off the rock got my points and headed out. Headed north on 101 to Avenue of The Giants for a bonus what a good ride. Then up to Eureka for a loaf of bread. At that point I headed east on 299 total Kick ass road and then South to Red Bluff and checkpoint 2 Then North back to east on 299 Kick ass road. To cassel CA for a bonus with a Dinasour. Then Southeast to Susanvillle airport and to the NV border to checkpoint three. Great I have now got all three checkpoints alll I have to do is get to the starting line on time to be a finisher.

Ok off to Reno to a casino to get Keno ticket scored fast no problem.

Ok now west to a few more bonuses and to Dunnigan.

Well at this point I am riding along another participant and notice his rear tire is showing steel I get him to pull over and sure enough his steel is showing. So number one rule Dont Leave Anyone Who needs Help. He told me th go on ahead but I didnt think that sounded to good so we exchanged cell phoine numbers and he headed for Dunnigan as I collected a couple more bonuses along the way but I kept seeing him as I hit the interstate to get to next bonus. Well made it in on time about 10 min to spare checked in with officals and turned in paperwork. Kisk Assssss I made it.Oh the guy with the tire was there also./

We went to banquet were I recieved plaque for finishing I was 16 out of 43 with 1083 miles so I can also get the ss1000 for it. I headed out to Redding CA. That evening. Get up Monday morning go to Whiskeytown Shast nat rec area for a stamp and the north to Crater lake OR. Very nice place to visit But alot of snow ther still. From there I head north on 97 to Bend OR and then east on 20to Burnes OR and stay the night. Up early tuesday morning all is great. head east to I84 to UT. Just inside of Utah state line about to get off interstate to get stamp at Golden spike Nat. Hist Site. I see shit in the rode to late to avoid hold on tight Bump Bump OH SH@T ok still upright but feeling mushy. Pull it over to shouler get off change pants and try to figure what the damage is. I got two bent wheels and two flat tires.

Put helmet on ground behind bike and not ten min. later a goldwing and two scooters pull over to assist. They got to next town 12 miles away and get me a flat bed tow truck and we get it off intersytate and get to a hotel with a Yami dealer across the street in Brigom UT. I had a friend that I was able to contact by cell phone post my situation on this website and got some very fast reponces and offers for help.

Called Mike at University motor the next morning top see how fast I could get wheels. He informed me that there were none in the US and the are backordered at the Jap. warehouse NO ship date avalible. So I called Budget rent a truck got a little truck loaded up bike with help of lkocal dealer and headed home.

Not quite how I wanted trip to end. But No road rash so not to bad.

Total of 4668 miles

The End
