Andy and I will be doing the ride, the service and the BBQ. I marked one guest for the meal but didn't mark him down for the ride ot the service.

We're staying at the Holiday Inn. It looks as though there will be a great group of people there, and at the other hotels too.

Jill

Booked a room at the Santa Barbara Motel 6, 2 full beds for Friday night. Ride and service on Saturday, then home to Yucaipa.

Dan.

For what it is worth, I marked "No" for the canyon rides as I will be in the cage with my wife. That many corners would not work for her or the upholstery on her side of the car. We will however hook up with the group towards the end of the ride if possible.
Any other cagers or just me?
There will be several "cages" departing from Goleta to hook-up with the group. We'll gather in the Zodo's parking lot; TIME TBD. The final section of the Memorial Ride will be Foxen Canyon soutward then back onto 101 South. There will be adequate time to refresh after the ride (for those inclined).

The actual service is being held in the SOCIAL HALL of the church facility. The DRESS CODE is casual; riding gear is just fine.

These details will also be re-posted with final ride itinerary.

Patti

Forgive me if I've just missed it, but this barbeque? Pay at the door? Send funds ahead? Preparation help?Exact location?

Thank you.
The Tri-Tip BBQ has already been funded by "Friends of the Forum". Preparation is being handled by extended family through the church.

LIVING FAITH CENTER: 4597 Hollister Avenue Santa Barbara CA 93110 (805) 967.5651

Updated Details of the Memorial Ride will be posted soon. Thanks for your concerns.

<ROUTE UPDATED! PLEASE VERIFY YOU HAVE THE CORRECT ROUTE!>

Yes, I meant to shout...

Ok everyone, here is the Memorial Ride specifics as promised. The route has been shortened from our original idea. There were several reasons for this:

1. We have a schedule to keep and we can't afford to be late for the service in the afternoon.

2. This is a remembrance, not an endurance or speed race. We're keeping it short, keeping it simple and keeping it safe.

3. Like I said, we are keeping it safe. This route has enough "interesting" roads to keep us all happy without getting too technical. The more technical the route, the more we increase our chances of dumping a bike or losing a rider who is trying to catch up. NOT the kind of thing we want to do on ANY ride, much less this one.

4. Finally, RIDE YOUR OWN RIDE! Do not feel that you must be right behind the lead pack or that you must try to ride faster than you feel comfortable or beyond you abilities. You KNOW where we are going and you KNOW we are going to stop make several stops. Don't push it!

We would like to avoid the traffic issues associated with 50 motorcycles leaving the Holiday Inn all at the same time. Therefore, I have provided stops and times that we will stick to as much as possible so that you can meet us along the route. If you can, please leave ahead of us and stop somewhere safe on 154. Then you can pick up the group as it goes by. In fact, if you want to just go ahead of the main group and meet in Santa Maria that would be fine. You can choose your own route and timetable to get to Pappy's Diner. Just remember, we leave Pappy's Diner (Santa Maria) at 1130 sharp... ok, maybe 1145 but NO LATER!

On the return trip through Foxen Canyon, we will be riding a bit slower and we will have the cagers at the rear of the pack. There may be a stop or two along the way, as this was one of Tim and Patti's favorite areas. Just be ready for it if it happens.

At the end of the ride, several people will be returning to the hotel to freshen up. There is no NEED to finish at the church, but that will be our next destination.

Service begins at 3 p.m. in the Social Hall. Dress is MC casual as it is not "expected" of anyone to be dressed for a funeral. This is Patti's wish.

A quick reminder of the ground rules for group rides. Yes, everyone should read these just so that we are all on the same page. There is nothing worse than a group ride with people who don't know how to ride in a group!

- The leader leads. Period! Stay behind the leader and watch for signals that indicate trouble ahead. He will set the pace and we WILL ride The Pace.

- Ride in staggered formation. Leader rides left (or at least left on straight away) and the rest stagger according to where they are in the group. If someone drops out, then everyone behind them will have to switch riding positions. That's just how it works.

- Ride 2 seconds behind the rider in FRONT of you (the next guy in your track), and 1 second behind the staggered rider immediately to your front and side. You will set your speed according to the guy in front of you in your track. This keeps the group tight and reduces the accordion affect.

- Break the group up a bit every 8 to 10 bikes. A pseudo-leader with a longer gap can lead about 8-10 bikes before it gets to be messy.

- Finally, pay attention. There is nothing worse than running into the bike in front of you because you were watching the butterflies in the field next to you. Ride safe, ride your OWN ride and live to ride another day!

Several of us will be riding with radios. If you have a GMRS/FRS radio, we will be on channel 7. Please keep your side conversations to a minimum so that the leader and clean-up can talk. We will also be advising of problems ahead. Yes, there will be a few "unofficial" comments. We are, of course, FJR riders! Just don't start telling us how you spent your summer vacation on the main channel.

In my experience, staggered only works on straight roads. As soon as a turn comes up, bikes start crossing the lane and are then following too closely. I have been tailgated on every publicly-arranged group ride I've been part of.

JMHO, unless the bikes are going to stay in their respective wheel tracks through turns (which will have the left-track people hanging body & bike parts into the oncoming lane). You'd probably be surprised how many don't adjust when entering a turn, and even if they do, the "accordion effect" comes into full action.

Best of luck on that ride, be safe, we'll see y'all at the service!

PLEASE EDIT my previous vote, for participating in the ride, going to the service and going to the BBQ.

I will NOT be making the ride -- please all ride safely. I will still be attending the service and the BBQ.

Tony Rob and I are in for the ride Saturday morning.

We'll be staying in Malibu Friday night.

We'll have to pass on the BBQ as we need to bet gack home.

B) If anyone needs a place to stay in Santa Barbara and wants to share a room ?

I have a extra bed. Motel 6, 4200 Via Real, Santa Barbara/ Carpinteria.

See Ya there. Dan

Group Riding Techniques
Please..........

Actually READ the above links!

I know every rider on this site thinks the above instructions are for everyone else.....I know because I plan and lead rides and have seen the careless, thus dangerous, actions behind me by those who do not exercise self-control!

I have been on rides where the person following me had their front tire INSIDE of my rear tire on a turn. I've witnessed several others far closer than a 2-second cushion. I've seen riders habitually lean over the center line on left hand corners. I've witnessed riders "going wide" on turns.

To me, all of the above symptoms are riders who are riding above their own personal ability without regard for others around them. Please consider that nobody at this ride is going to be 100% mentally aware. The very reason for this ride is enough to cause minds and hearts to wander. This has the distinct possibility to turn the event "ugly" and I believe it is the reason some are refusing to ride and honor Tim by doing so.

Toecutter is absolutely correct in his post: When riding on freeways in stagger formation a rider should leave 2 seconds gap to the person in front of them and 1 second gap to the person to their side (the "stagger" rider). When the road becomes a 2-lane affair with turns and twists, the formation should change to single file with 2-3 seconds between bikes and each rider should hold that position rather than "pushing" the rider in front of them.

Do you know how to count "one thousand 1...one thousand 2" and gauge the time between yourself and the rider you are following? Including braking before turns? Assuming you realize you should brake BEFORE the turn and accelerate through it......not brake into the corner thus invading the space of the rider ahead of you. This isn't a competition but a ride to honor our fallen friend!

Since the plan is to divide the master group into smaller, more manageable sections, one hopes that everyone realizes the intent is NOT to catch the group ahead but rather to keep a distance between them for safety and for good relations with the motoring public who would be highly offended at a group of 50+ motorcycles riding as a rolling blockade.

Really, ladies and gentlemen, one should not need to explain the basics to this group but what I have witnessed on the past group rides has given me enough pause and worry I thought something should be said (3 different rides in different locals with someone taking an off-road excursion in each ride. Thankfully nobody was injured!))

Don't just give ascent to the links above...read them...understand them....DO THEM!

Let's all ride safely and without issues. IMO, if you can't, or won't, control your testosterone fueled urges while riding with a group, this may not be a ride you should join.

Please, think about what I've typed...then think again...then read the links and think some more.

___________________________________________________

As an aside, maybe some of us should ride the route in the opposite direction?!?!? That would effectively split the group, wouldn't it?

+1 Mike!

I tried to keep my post from sounding too much like a sermon, but I really wanted to get the same point across. This is a memorial ride and not a race. I will be riding slower than normal and I will be riding for the people around me... not for my own enjoyment.

Group rides can be a LOT of fun and they can have a very powerful impact on the riders and those who witness it. They can also turn bad quickly. I would rather the latter did not occur.

Again, know the route (so you don't have to "catch-up" to prevent getting lost), remember WHY we are riding as a group and RIDE YOUR OWN RIDE with the other peplle in the group in mind as well.

I'll see you guys on the 27th at whatever starting point you decide to join the group. I HOPE to see every one of you at the memorial service at the end of the ride.
