Hmmmmm.... what do you engine techs out there think about these motorcycle engine specs?

Just curious.... ;)

Engine type: 1645cc (100ci) liquid-cooled 90º V4; dual OHV; chain-driven single cam; hydraulic lifters
Transmission: 6-speed sequential gearbox; unit construction; wet multiplate clutch

Bore x Stroke: 86.5mm (3.41in) x 70.0mm (2.75in)

Compression: 11.5:1

Valves: Intake Ø44.5mm (1.75in); Exhaust Ø36.8mm (1.45in); stainless steel

Dimensions: 610mm (24in) L x 492mm (19in) W x 508mm (20in) H

Performance: Minimum 140bhp @ 7800rpm; 162Nm (120lb-ft) @ 4500rpm; 8000rpm redline

Materials: 356-T6 cast aluminum block and heads; forged steel crank, cam, rods; forged aluminum pistons; linerless Nikasil bore

Firing order: 1 - 4 - 3 - 2

Ignition Sequence: TDC - 345º - 435º - 630º

Crankpin Offset: 75º

Minimum Octane: 87

Chevy small block with 4 cylinders removed. "Sport" will not be in the name of the Motus bike. Low rpm, high torque cruising and easy on the gas. 90 degree engines are unfriendly to work into a sporty handling frame, but it fits a stable cruiser chassis just fine.

I just hate to see so much potential power left on the drafting board.

An American company wanting to introduce a Sport Touring motorcycle.

Secret engineering department design napkin:

The MST-01 is a fresh take on the American motorcycle - a comfortable sportbike designed for long distance canyon carving, solo or two-up.

It all started innocently enough. After a long autumn ride in 2007, we sat around telling tales and envisioning our ultimate dream bike. “More comfort”, was suggested by the race-replica rider rubbing her wrists and back. “Longer range”, gasped another who sputtered in on fumes. “Better performance”, said the cruiser guy who brought up the rear. Wind protection, light weight, multiple power ports, and sensible seat height were also jotted down.

After the dust settled, we realized the features scribbled on our napkin described a sport-tourer. The concept for the MST-01 motorcycle was born and what started rather casually that day has become an obsession for us at Motus.

Engine specs look interesting.... I'd like to ride it at least once!

As for the concept bike.... chain drive? Really? Nope, not interested.

Pretty healthy size cylinder bore. Valve size is a pretty good compromise between low end torque and top end power. Valve lift and cam duration are great unknowns. How the 6 gears of the transmission are matched to the final drive ratio will have a lot to do with the perception of power delivery. Right off the top, the touring unfriendly chain drive will deliver ~8-10% less power loss than a shaft drive, be much lighter and allow cog changes. Direct injection will aid power, efficiency and emissions. Hope their bits and bytes guys can write a hot performance program with an option for a touring program; selectable with the push of a button. What slows this freight train down? ABS available?

I wonder what kind of break-in they will specify, and what oil they recommend. Will it use common sport/tour tire sizes or will they strike out and spec some very rare and expensive rubber?

Wow, dual overhead valves!!!! Oooh!! Ahhh!!!

Just like the '60 Biscayne my high school buddy had.

So they're really gonna put a pushrod engine in and call it modern?? At least maybe hydraulic lifters, then, no valve checks . . .

There was an article on it last year , if it ever materializes it would be worth a test ride at the very least.

Well, the engine looks interesting for a more touring oriented bike, but as said above, the chain drive doesn't match that goal. The drawing looks like a hybrid Victory Vision, kind of ugly in my opinion. And I would expect it to be too pricey to be competitive for my dollars.

One of the engineers at the Birmingham based company was part of the design team that produced the Confederate Motorcycle Company's $55k Wraith:

The MST-01 engine sounds like a ripping hotrod V-8, which strangely enough is what it is designed like. Then again, my hotrodded V-Max sounded like a hotrod V-8 too. I had problems with people wanting to come over and rev Mad-Max's engine just to listen to the sound. They got the sound right, now to see how they do with the rest of the bike.

As far as cost, they have invested in a new engine which is big bucks. Next it needs all the government certs, yet more big bucks as well as a whole new rolling chassis. They project an annual sales volume of 450 or so units. Do the math (big bucks3)/small sales number = high unit cost.

I'm pretty sure the final product will be out of my motorcycle mission profile, but it is an interesting project.

It is indeed an interesting project. Not that I am in any danger of getting one anytime soon, but... the bike does have some awfully interesting things going for it.

I don't really understand the pre-occupation with a chain drive... perhaps this is due to my history of LD chain bikes. If a chain-drive system didn't really get in the way of a little 7-day, 10,500+ mile romp a couple years ago, I wouldn't think it's likely to bother someone who is on, say, a coast-to-coast ride.

Especially if the Pro-Oiler is your friend... :D

So why would a company that is so engine based and power driven want to change the power direction and not do a shaft drive instead. If your allready inlining it rearwards than why not flip it at the ass end instead of in the tranny? I'm Not anti chain but hate directional changes in power....

D

And WC all that stuff looks awasome when its new...

Why ride with half a V-8 if you can ride with the whole thing?

https://www.hossflyinc.com/home.html

If you don't want to ride on a bar stool with four wheels and a chevy v-8, how about two wheels and a chevy v-8?

https://www.bosshoss.com/

They had one of the Hossflies on display at Bumpus H-D in Murfreesboro, TN the other day.

If only they sold implements for it, like mower decks, lawn rollers, leaf collectors, etc.
