From the, linked, article:
"The scheduled work on Old Priest Grade has been delayed for about two years partly due to concerns about elderberry bushes that were found in the project area. The bushes are known to provide habitat for the rare valley elderberry longhorn beetle.
For the road work to proceed, the county was forced to pay $28,000 to a Stockton elderberry bush sanctuary to pay for their removal."

Thanks Tyler. Regarding the proposal to make it one way or close it entirely, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there are plenty of roads that if not driven/ridden with care, can kill you. If we closed every road that has accidents/fatalities due to driver stupidity, we'd have a lot less routes to be able to navigate our mountainous areas with. Personal responsibility/restraint is the key, we can't make all roads 100% safe. If you can't already tell, Old Priest Grade is a personal favorite, right in my back yard and this kind of talk gets my BP up. Sorry.... rant over.

Just rode down it yesterday. And BTW, it had fresh black asphalt laid along its entire length.

Enjoyed reading the thoughts on this thread. Maybe there is hope for sensible road management? That whole area (J 59) near La Grange is new asphalt.

I'm with CAJW on this one. The OPG is unique, and kind of in a time warp. New roads are engineered to be so safe they'll never build another stretch like this one again, and there are plenty of people who would force shutting anything like this down until every road in the country is straight and level. The only similar kind of thing I know of is that famous stretch of Lombard Street in S.F.

I wonder how long till they shut it down at both ends and turn it into a city park? (Of course, I'd hate to live on it with the constant stream of cars going by my front door all day and night, but then I'd never BUY a house there either--even if I COULD afford it. I wouldn't buy a house at the end of an airport runway either. And then sue the airport.)

The Old Priest Grade makes me think of the old wagon road it originally was every time I take it. It's not really a fun motorcycle road; you have to take it super slow and easy. There probably isn't a straight stretch of 100 feet anywhere on it and it's only a couple miles long at most (and it gains about half a mile of elevation). But it just kind of says "Wild West" to me. I hope they leave it the hell alone.
