The Coastal Highway is Complete!

 

The Coastal Highway El Golfo de Santa Clara - Puerto Penasco, of approximately 134 km in length was inaugurated on December 17th by the Sonoran Governor, Eduardo Bours Castelo, during an improvised ceremony in the town park. The highway will bring many benefits to the Gulf of Santa Clara and Puerto Penasco, but will also attract visitors, namely Californians. Because of the highway, millions of people just got a lot closer to the Gold Coast of Sonora's northern, pristine beaches. The highway, known in Mexico as "La Costera," will tap into a large potential of tourism for Sonora and Arizona, as the region attracts visitors and investment from Orange County, Calif., and San Diego. The drive from Yuma to El Golfo is about 1 hour, 15minutes. From El Golfo to Rocky Point it is about an hour drive.

On one of our 2 nights spent in Rocky Point, I thought that we would go out on a Sunset Booze Cruise. Being of the Irish persuasion, I rarely drink alcohol, but I'm only thinking about the rest of you!!

Why go: Several companies run

these two-hour cruises, which

typically include a light dinner and

all the draft beer and margaritas

you can drink, as well as views of

leaping dolphins and the sun

setting over the bay. Ticket sellers

are positioned all over town on

busy streets, giving vague

instructions about walking 10

minutes down "this" road and

then "you'll just see it." And

although it's rarely only 10

minutes and may involve a few

turns, you will, in fact, just see it,

because there are only two places

to pick up the cruises.

 

Crowd: Everyone, including

families with children, and, of

course, live musicians.

 

Food: Skip it, or give it to your

drunk friend. Served in small

portions on foam plates, it ranges

from fajitas and rice to beef or

shrimp tacos.

 

Recommended: Pick a clear night

for your trip so you're sure to

catch the fireworks.

Good to know: Cups are often

just a little bigger than Dixie cups,

and you pay (up to $8 a shot) for

additional liquor.

 

Good to know:Tickets are about

$25-$30 each for adults, children

are admitted free. Students

typically can get discounts.

 

Good to know: Expect to see lots

of families. Be nice to the kids -

they're the most fun to watch on

the dance floor later.

 

Recommended: Head downstairs

to dance to the live band. The

rocking of the boat makes it that

much more entertaining.

I used https://www.hotels.com and their cancellation policy is "no fees" if the room is canceled before Noon on Thursday, October 27.

Hotels.com toll free number: 1-800-246-8357. Donna and Papa Chuy's Ocean View room was $268.94 for both nights, all taxes and fees included. Pool view rooms are $10 per night less.

The Hotel Dining Room has La Comida muy Delicioso, overlooking the pool; La Cantina serves "Los Robustos" Margaritas y Pina Coladas! Fiesta, Arriba, Baile!

Oh yeah, that thing looks like a safe sea-worthy vessel. NOT!

Once your portly frame steps onboard, it's going to capsize! Unless we put you down in the bilge as ballast. :lol:

$270 for two nights! Jesus Cristo! They are supposed to be hurting down there and begging for touristas!

As long as you give me a bottle of Tequila, four bottles of Dos Equis Amber and a plate of enchiladas, arroz y frijoles: I've no problemos riding in the bilge for ballast, ese!

Asi, asi; que lastima es exactamente! It shocked me too, but that was the going rate I found at five different travel search engines. But as you well know mi Compadre what the real deal is, since you now have been riding into Mexico with me for almost a decade now!

If we didn't reserve ahead of time, and they had empty rooms, we could bargain for rooms at half price! But since I have Donna traveling with me, it would freak her out to see us arguing and fighting the clerk over rates, even though it's simply the way it's done en Mexico!

Thank You, Doug! Sometimes I shake my old head in wonder I made it to 63, God has been looking after me! If you change your mind Bugnatr, this trip can be done on the spur of the moment: No Banjercito or Turista Carta to deal with on this MEX run. Just get your bike insurance online at MexPro.

BUMP REMINDER!

Six weeks from today and we of the Southwest FJR Forum will be crossing into Mexico and you will need a Passport. You can still get your Passport under normal fees and processing, if you wait a week you better consider paying extra for expedited Passport delivery.

You'll need Mexican Insurance on your motorcycle; I've used MexPro for decades with great results, https://www.mexpro.com or call them toll free at 1-888-467-4639.

I have a friend in Rocky Point with a 32 foot catamaran sailboat that he keeps there. I will see if he is there that weekend for a sail in the bay. Im hoping that Claire will come along with me for the ride. She loves Santa Clara and the Coast. We used to ride dirt bikes from Rocky Point to Santa Clara and back before the road was built and actually rode on the beach when the dirt trail gave out. It was about 150 miles round trip or so. There are incredible views the closer you get to Santa Clara and the terrain is mostly untouched. Whale bones on the beach. Im hoping on offering a sailing adventure for any club members aboard my catamaran Paradox which is currently on dry dock in Guaymas. I need to do maintenance work and I dont have a date yet. It is about 100 nautical miles across the Sea of Cortez to Baja California and is considered a top sailing area in the world. Incredible sea life and considerible number of european flagged sailboats. Cabo is considered the leaving point for the south pacific.

I found Las Conchas hotel and restaurant phone number is 653-515-7001 . Ramon is the owner. Maragaritas on the beach. The place is also safe to leave your bikes overnight.

There is a Hobie Cat regata (pinata regata) October 8th and 9th in Rocky Point at Playa Bonita RV park if anyone should want to ride down and spend the night and hang out. I will be driving down with Claire in the car and camping

Que lastima ese, as if poor old Mexico didn't have enough "la Basura - trash" there already.  He's hoping your bonita blue K16 will be here before October 28!
