New Hamshire Noise Law

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire House has passed a new testing standard for motorcycle noise in an attempt to curb noisy bikes.

Supporters of the J2825 test from the Society of Automotive Engineers International are enjoying a 261-80 vote of approval. Supporters say the test is more accurate and practical than the test the state uses now, which was intended for off-road bikes.

The new testing standard allows for 92 decibels while idling and either 96 or 100 decibels while revving the engine at a certain speed, depending on the engine type. This is lower than the current 106 decibel standard, but supporters say it is due to increased accuracy in testing protocols.

Supporters say the new test allows for more practical, accurate roadside testing and will help enforce noise regulations.

We'll see how it goes. Typically the enforcement is the tricky part. But hopefully a few riders will get the message.

It will be interesting at Laconia this year when the team doing the testing comes up against the NY Chapter of the Hell's Angels. :nono:

Here is what Delaware did in regard to noisey motorcycles. At least in the southern part of the state the vehicle inspection station no longer measures for noise from motorcycles. I can only assume it is viewed as not worth the trouble. Most owners will put a stock type of exhaust on the bike for the state inspection and then go home and put the louder exhaust back on anyway. Perhaps the state has decided to let the police deal with the problem on the street.
