I had a note from Phil that Sunday would be in the mid-70s and he was hot to do the break-in ride on his 2012 FJR. I got a little ambitious with Mapsource and came up with this idea...A 410 mile loop out of Sacramento via the Capell Valley Road to Calistoga, then up through the Alexander, Russian River and Dry Creek wine country to Stewarts Point Skaggs Springs Road. A trip up the coast to a great BBQ lunch spot in Gualala called Bones Roadhouse, then return via Mountain View Rd, Hwy 128, Mountain House, Hwy 175 (Cobb Mountain), Clearlake and a run for home on Hwy 20.

It was an ambitious plan, so we left at the crack of....um 9:00 AM. Phil just took delivery on his 2012 FJR a couple weeks ago and had only put on about 70 miles between some short runs and a ride I took him on out to Salmon Falls Rd a week ago. Jamie, rode 7500 miles with me across the country on his Harley Sportster, and now has a 2006 FJR. For what it's worth, they look identical, and it's a good thing I had the Galaxy Blue bike to stand out on this trip.

Napa Valley Hwy 128 north of Calistoga, it looks like Spring (and it looks like I can't hold the camera steady while pointing backwards). Phil left and Jamie right.

Phil looking like the proud papa, is 6'-4: and a definite candidate to join us in Los Rosbustos MC.

A landmark! The mustard is in full bloom now and creates a yellow carpet between the still leafless vines in the Valley.

We rolled thorugh the wine country to Healdsburg then refueled for the trip to the Coast. Passing Lake Sonoma we turned on to Skaggs Springs Road. Here Phil and Jamie learned what it's like to drag footpegs. The predictable radius turns, perfect pavement and lack of any LEO presence made this a perfect run. It was also much too fast for me to snap photos and I was out of sight ahead of the others so as not to distract them from the serious business at hand.

Skaggs Springs crosses a river and becomes a different road. This "Goat trail" was useful for explaining to Phil why he would soon be looking for a custom seat.

So who can tell me the difference between the 2012 on the left and the 2006 center, both struggling to keep up with their senior brethren on the right?

A perfect day on the coast, with the fog far out at sea.

Well, it was certainly about time for lunch, and there is no place finer on the northern California coast than Bones Roadhouse in Gualala. The Roadhouse is right on the coast and has a great view of the ocean. Jamie and I waiting for the main course.

My favorite is the Texas BBQ Brisket, served with a couple sides and a choice of hot or mild sauce and a judicious serving of Boont Amber Ale from the Alexander Brewery in Booneville.

He likes the new bike so much he bought us lunch :yahoo:

Time to head up the coast to Mountain View road. The shadows are already foretelling of late afternoon. On a 400 mile day, you don't get to sit in the sun at a leasurly lunch and finish in daylight at this time of year.

Pretty as a picture

Mountainview Road is a bit goaty in spots, and Phil let me know it was getting painful. So after going through Booneville, we headed up Mountain House Rd, and then the unbeliveable twisties and swithchbacks of Hwy 175 to cross the ridge to Clearlake

By the time we were on Hwy 175 / 29 heading into Lower Lake the sun was setting, and we still had 130 miles to get home.

As darkness fell, we rolled towards Lower Lake and refueled in Clearlake. We made the decision to stay on the relatively major road Hwy 20 to I-5 to get home. With more daylight we would normally take Hwy 16 through Cache Valley. In the dark, my HID lights and Clearwater Kristas burned a wall of light into the darkness. The Escort radar detector gave early warning of a CHP up the road cloaked in the darkness under a tree. Phil exclaimed, "I didn't know what happened, we're on a straight passing lane one minute doing 75, and the next you threw out the anchor." Al in all farkles are good, and I ended with a good appreciation of my seat, taller windshield and auxiliary lighting compared to the new bikes today.

What a great spring day. Mission accomplished, Phil's bike has 590 miles on it and he is stoked for his first break-in service. :clapping:

Michael, you weren't working on Sunday, were you?

Thanks Papa Chuy Viejo! See you in Big Sur next month. I'll bring Michael if we can drag him from work and Irish whisky.

Gosh darn nice ride report! spent a few nice summers in the area in the 80's while at the Geysers, riding the XS 750 out the coast while courting my honeybunny. nice memories rekindled. Thanks!

Escort radar detector works for the CHP with out being busted?

It's not the radar detector...it's the Clearwater lights that make 75 in a 55 at night possible.

Great ride report. It brings back fond memories of the same rides MsNASCAR and I did while residing in Santa Rosa a few years back. Really miss those roads.
