Thanks a lot for the sound bytes. I have some noise in my engine that I think is the fuel injectors but I have noever heard the 'tick' before so I wasn't sure. Now I know that I do not have the tick, at least not yet. Got almost 7000 miles on my '05.

Does anyone know how to download these files so I can save them on my PC?

I've tried with all browsers ie, EXPLORER, NAVIGATOR, FIREFOX and SAFARI to get these files to play, NO LUCK. Perhaps it's a MAC vs Windows thing. Any way that you could post the mp3 files for download somewhere? I would really like to listen to these, I'm afraid I may have a ticker and this might help to diagnose the problem.

Thankx for taking the time and energy to post these in the first place.

Thankx

Viewing Errors

The video does not play, or audio plays with no video.

Make sure that you have the latest Windows Media player and the latest Quicktime player installed.

Make sure that you give the video enough time to load, it may take a few minutes.

If the video still does not play, the video may be encoded with DIVX or another custom codec.

Mac users must use the latest OSX, Internet Explorer, and install all the latest players. Even then some of the Windows media may not work on your Mac.

I'm a MAC user and everything I use is pretty well the latest versions. the audio will not play no matter which player I asign as default. Though I usually have no problems at all viewing files from PutFile.com within Safari, both video and audio.

Is there some way to download the file to my drive from putFile? I have numerous utilities that can read just about any format on the planet....

Thanks for posting your recordings, Pilot.:boss:

I'm sorry about your ticking bike but I sure appreciate your effort in documenting it.

Here are direct links to the .mp3 files. Most browsers (I use Mac Firefox myself) will play them via the QuickTime plugin, or you can download them into your iPod and play them to your dealer for reference :D

Ticking 1

Ticking 2

Thanks to 04 FJR Pilot for uploading these. My '05 with 5400 miles isn't ticking yet...

Not the sound I wanted to hear. However, my ears are old so maybe I'm just not hearing the thing right. As it is, my '04 makes a similar noise - perhaps for the last 15,000 miles (of 25,000). The noise goes away when the earplugs go in. Plus, there has been no tell tale external sign of excessive valve guide wear (i.e. the oil drip on the tail of the exhaust).

Can someone post a non-tick audio file for comparison?

Yoicks,

a.....

Thanks for the new link. Mine also makes the same noise now at 15,500 mi.

It's been making that sound since 8k, but has never gotten louder to the point of those sound bytes. It's been staying the same, and ONLY rears it's ugly head after a long trip on a hot day. From here on in I may not hear it again until spring.

Very strange. I have this sinking feeling it will get extremely worse the day after my YES contract expires.

If yours sounds like this then you have the problem. It may not blow oil out of the exhaust until the bitter end and it would be best to not saturate the cats with oil. If it sounds like this have your dealer listen to it.

Side note: I can't make a recording of a non-ticker as I don't have one in the area. Mine tick's,Luv2ride's tick and the other one in the area seems to have signs of it. Anyone else starting to think the .3% Yamaha stated in MC magazine is way off????

There are no tickers of mass destruction! :p

Dayum Rick, your bike DID get worse! It sounds as bad as mine, now... & I got over 20,000 miles on my girl.

FYI... there are a couple of non tickers in my area. Jeff Dean (ridgerunner) & Joe Prentiss (JPrentiss) both have non tickers.

I was thinking about asking Jeff to come with me up to the local dealer and ask them to listen to his... & then listen to mine. There's a big difference there!

Also, I'm starting to get the tell-tale blue haze around the end of my cans.

Real nice, huh?

Heidi

For fear of a harassment case I won't ask about seeing your cans! LOL yes she is much worse than when I set out for EOM. I forgot about Joe being in VA beach. Personally don't think we need a recording of a non-ticker. If it doesn't sound like this then you are fine. Just try to remember what it sounded like when it was new. Mine was like a sewing machine until 2500 miles other than the common surging (barbarian mod helped tha a little bit). Then the faint rattle began that could not be pin pointed. Then 5000 miles the light ticking began that could be heard on and off in the left side. Now at 9000 miles it ticks loudly at all times! Power is definitley not what it was. She used to lift the front wheel with a good twist of the wrist. Now I'd be lucky to get it up! :haha: Viagra in the form of a valve job might help!

When it was new, all I could hear was the laughing inside my helmet. I still remember that, but I don't exactly remember the sound of the engine. As for me (or is it "we", Mr. 04 FJR Pilot), I'd still like to hear a non-ticker for comparison.

My appreciation in advance to anyone who can do so.

thanks for the audio, I often wondered what it sounds like,I honestly didn't want to know,I'm glad to say I just turned 12000 and mine still sounds good...knock on wood :coolio:

Well if anyone wants to bring their non-ticker to Elizabeth City, N.C. I would be glad to make the recording and post it.

Rick :arrowhead:

I just ran the 2nd mp3 thru WaveLab, Soundforge, Cubase SX2, and Nuendo 2. You can describe the ticking as a sound centered aroun 3,900 Hz at about -32 db where the 0 db level consists of mostly the 80-88 hz hum of the exhaust.

In other words, if you have a multiband EQ and cut everything from about 3.7 kHz on down, boost the upper mid/highs (3.9 kHz) and cut every thing over 4.2 kHz, you can clearly hear the tick.

I have a lovely screen capture of the 3D spectrum analysis as a .jpg. Don't know how to post a pic, tho.

Oh, you guys just KILL me with your jokes! You and that pilot guy!!! Hey, you don't ask me about my cans, I don't ask you about your valve jobs, ok? We gotta' deal?

:D

Oh, and Mr. Pilot man... no plans for a recording in the future for me.

As the Mr. pilot dude said... if yours doesn't sound like this that would be a good thing. Mine ticks like a beotch!

Guys,

I think mine is a "ticker" after a trip to CA this summer but what is the cause? The reason I ask is that I let the bike sit for 3 weeks after coming home from a 5500 mile trip. When I went to start it it made a very loud tapping or knocking sound for about 15 seconds. It then subsided. Is this an issue where oil "leaks down" from the top end? This noise went away steadily into the "tick". Time to see the dealer.
