    SS1000 or BB1000

I have done SS1000s both ways, alone and in a group. The group ride was only four people. The differences in gas tank size, need for rest, etc. can be a little frustrating if you don't plan for it. My solo rides have never taken anything close to 24 hours - usually 18 hours or less. The...

    Scorpion Helments

I got an EXO-1000 last week and spent this weekend trying it out. I am replacing a Scuberth Concept. The Schuberth also has the flip down sun shade. I love this feature, and when I saw that Scorpion was going to have a new helmet with the same thing I knew I had to try it. The Scorpion is...

FJR not what is cracked up to be

I have had my 06 since last July. It now has 16,000 miles, and I am on the third set of tires. The OEM tires were fine. The Dunlops that I put on at 8,000 miles introduced me to the wonderful world of front end wobble. When those tires disappeared, so did the wobble. YMMV VM

    Ducati Open House

I rode the Motard at an open house the local dealer had a month or two ago. What a fun ride!! It seems lots of dealers are offering these demo rides - don't miss out on the chance to hop on a great ride. VM

    Test drove k1200gt

When I bought my FJR I was (and still am) a BMW owner. I have the R1150R - naked boxer. I rode the K12 and the R12. I also rode the ST1300. In the end it came down to the K12 or the FJR. Price was a factor. Service cost was also a factor, because I am not a mechanic. (BMW=Bring More...

SS on the way to CFO

I just completed a Saddlesore ride late yesterday afternoon. Mileage via odometer was 1053. Mileage from GPS was 1033. Interestingly, this is almost exactly the same diffrence (+/20 miles) I got when I did a Saddlesore on my BMW last summer. Bottom line - a fifty mile cushion will probably be...

    Stealer let me test ride!

One of our local dealers keeps an FJR in his rental fleet. Before I bought I rented and FJR ($50 for a day) and put several hundred miles on it. I have been pleased with the FJR, and might have bought it without the ability to test it out so thoroughly, but the chance to really put it through...

    Highway vs. Backroads

I use Delorme, and it allows you to change the your average speed to adjust travel time. It still does not calucluate "stoppage time". One key thing is to avoid rush hour, which can be hard to do when routing through multiple cites. The traffic into Nashville on I-65 is really bad from 7:00...

    touring gear and accessories??

As I have matured (or at least aged) I have gone in the opposite direction from Jack. I used to prefer hotels, but now camp when I can. My gear is fairly simple. I have a 3 person tent Eureka tent. I like having extra room for gear inside the tent. I have both an air mattress and a...

Need your help with Corbin/Sargent for my '07

I am 5'10" but only have a 29' inseam. I have had a Corbin on my '06 for about 12,000 miles now, including a couple of 1,000 mile days. When I first got it the Corbin seemed to make a real difference in height. Now it seems like the difference between the seat heights (Corbin vs stock in low...

    Paying Attention on the Slab

Obstacles are dangerous, but I the biggest obstacle to watch for is the distracted driver riding near you. I left the office Friday about 3:30 pm. The plan was to go do a little work about 30 miles east of Nashville, ride on to Crossville, camp, and head to the Hoot on Saturday moring...

    Gas Mileage

Last weekend I rode over to Asheville to attend the BMW RA rally. This is about 350 miles one way for me. I took a mix of slab and nice two lanes over, and the bike was loaded up for four days of camping. 46 MPG for that leg. While there I took a spin up to the old homestead in East...

    Garmin 2720 for $349.99 + S&H

I bought this unit for a similar price at WalMart right before Christmas and I LOVE IT!! VM

    Garmin 2610

Radman, That is a good price on the 2610. However, I would save a few more coins and buy the 2720 from WalMart. Their current price (online only) is $595. For the difference you will get all the maps preloaded (no need to worry about buying more memory like with the 2610) and you will get a...

    Routing for 48 States Ride

For the past few weeks I have been playing around with potential routes for a 48 states ride. The planning for any LD ride is critical, but even more so for this one I think. The actual ride probably would not be made until next summer, so I have lots of time to prepare. Do any of you have...

    12V Access While Riding

I use the stock outlet on the left side for my satellite radio (which I only plug in for long trips). I have hardwired my GPS, and added a powerlet for for heated jacket liner. The stock power outlet is good for something you only use occasionally. There is room under the lip of the door to...

    Group buys

I own one of those jackets, and I highly recommend it. On my trip to Denver last week it showed off its versatility. With the liner in and flaps closed it was very comfortable down to the mid 30's. With liner out and vents open it's good up to about 80. VM

    Nashville to Denver

I left early Friday morning. The plan was to ride two moderate days, and pull into Larkspur, CO (45 miles south of Denver) in time to grill some steaks and watch a little football with an old friend of mine. I routed through the southern part of Missouri, and enjoyed winding through the Ozarks...
