I have had a Garmin 350LM for about 2 years....in Minnesota that means I was able to use it for about 14 of the 28 months I have owned it. It started acting up about a year ago...it would intermittently drop the power when in the cradle. I replaced the power supply and all was fine until the Spearfish trip. It then began to drop power regularly and would completely fail for hours on end. I replaced the power supply again...only this time that had no effect. The only thing I can see that may have happened to the unit is vibration. I have never dropped, soaked or otherwise abused the unit at all. I had it mounted via an MCL reservoir mount on the clutch side of my handlebars. I noticed over the past few days of trying to solve the problem that at speeds above 80 the unit itself would display a pronounced high frequency vibration when I put my hand on it at higher speeds. I have replaced the unit with a new 390LM and have moved the mounting ball to my MV Riser plate dead center in front of the ignition switch. The unit has almost no vibration in that location relative to what I felt on the bars. I passed my old unit on to my son for his car. It works fine with the USB power cord connected. So...I have a question for all of the electronic minded folks here. Could that vibration have been cause for the failure of my old unit? Do I (we) need to pay a little more attention to mounting these types of devices on our rides to reduce failure? I was under the impression that with everything being solid state and chip mounted vibration damage was a thing of the past. Apparently not?
