It was hardly a banner year for snow in the Sierra, and both Sonora and Tioga have opened, with Hwy 4 Ebbetts Pass soon to follow. Today I played hooky and charged up to Jackson, and took Hwy 88 over Carson Pass, then bypassed the closed Ebbetts Pass, went over Monitor, and on to Sonora. The objective was to go in stealth mode, so I waited for the wife to go to work, and took off at about 9:40 AM. Traveled with out the top case today and just took a jacket liner for the high altitudes.

Most camera work is from the seat of the bike in motion. This was a quick trip.

Heading up Hwy 88 I could look north to Desolation Wilderness and Pyramid Peak. This is at 7500 feet and clearly no snow. In fact during the entire trip, I never passed between high walls of plowed snow and there was none to be seen below 8000 feet.

Heading up Carson Pass through the Spur. This would be a good time not to fixate on a target.

Kirkwood Meadows is melted out, but the North facing ski resort is holding on to winter.

Silver Lake was free of ice and snow, but up higher, Caples is just opening up. Last year it was fully frozen well into June.

Right off the Summit of Carson Pass

And looking down to Red Lake and Hope Valley. Spring is in the air.

Approaching Hope Valley a little fast the RD started alerting on a Ka signal. I had a good 3/4 mile warning for a CHP hidden well down the road from here behind some trees on the right side. Hope Valley is well patrolled, and it can be tempting to push the speeds up down this grade as the road straightens out..

Past the CHP and into the heart of Hope Valley, you can see that we are almost snow-free this year in the meadows and surrounding peaks above Luther Pass.

Turning towards Markleeville there is a rare sign of winter lingering on. Monitor Pass Hwy 89 is open, but Hwy 4 is still closed.

A fast dash over Monitor Pass offered a chance to Laminar Lip at triple digit speeds. I though it was over 110, but the GPS says only 106.

Oh no problem with the windshield contraption. It looks funny but it sure gives a quiet ride.

Time for a quick lunch in Walker

DSC_3862.jpg

Not really worthy of food porn, but here ya go. The Walker Ortega Chile Burger and Fries. Mountain View BBQ was closed. Maybe next time.

More to come

18 miles past Walker, I headed up Sonora Pas on Hwy 198. Forgot to turn the camera on for the traditional 28% grade warning sign, and started taking pictures of water falls.

Climbing on road in generally good condition. Watch for some gravel and sand, but no water on the roads.

Finally found some evidence of recent plowing.

Sonora Pass Summit! What a beautiful day...too bad my feet never touched the ground.

The Western slope is wetter. Here some skiers are just finishing up after hiking the summits and skiing in the early morning firmer snow.

Sand on the roads and snow on the mountain.

DSC_3885.jpg

Some fresh wet avalanche activity along with ski tracks on these steep slopes. Probably control work by CalTrans.

I do like the walls of red rock along Sonora Pass.

Hey! That's pretty much it except I managed to get 248 miles on 5.22 gallons of gas. For those of you counting, that is 47.1 MPG. Way above my average, and including some triple digit speed. Total trip was just under 400 miles from 9:50 AM to 4:30 PM. No one ever missed me, and my stealth trip worked as planned.

Very nice RR. I especially like the last pic in your posts. I had my Laminar Lip blow right off the bike. Here in NE we are get drops in the temp in the Fall. I believe the anchors don't like that and will let go. I now have mounted with the 3M things plus one plastic bolt thru the middle anchor. YMMW

Again nice RR

Tom,

It amazes us flatlanders, especially those of us in the "Deep South" that while you're still seeing snow on the ground, it hit 96 degrees here yesterday! :dribble:

As a comparison, this is a shot looking up the Carson Spur on May 12, 2011. Lots more snow. BTW altitude is everything. I needed the jacket liner as temps dipped into the 40s up hight, but it was 93 degrees returning through Sonora along Hwy 49 towards Jackson.

Great report, Tom. I've done that trip countless times over the years and never get tired of it. :)

Where IS all this loveliness?

Get a job, Tom!!!

(Geez, I'd love to have gone with....)

.... I needed the jacket liner as temps dipped into the 40s up high...
I'd have guessed you kept a hand-warmer.....in your PURSE!

Where are you these days Michael? You've become...the invisible man in the yellow helmet. Hope they set you free soon! :p

Enjoy Tioga Pass. I'd like to get there soon as well. Note that Cal Trans has a road closure on 120 EAST of 395. This does not affect the pass.
