Er, no.... this isn't correct for the FJR at all.

For example... an actual (GPS-verified) 70 mph in 5th gear equates to roughly 4200-ish RPM (for the pre-'06 bikes), and closer to 4000 for th '06 machines.

There is no gear on the FJR that will deliver 95.6mph at 4000 RPM as your chart depicts....

Warchild, That chart is from my current bike , not an FJR . Thanks by the way for all your wonderful tips across the forums , they have been quite enlightening .

 
I seem to remember that in top gear the pre06 FJR runs about 68 mph @ 4000 rpm & if memory serves me correctly that is what the 2000 Concours ran in 6th gear. In round numbers about 17 mph per 1000 rpm in top gear on both bikes. This is not exact but generally close for a rule of thumb.

Gear chart for Gen II FJRs. I'm not sure this model can pull redline in 5th gear so top speed may be less than predicted by the chart. The challenge is down :lol:

I haven't calibrated or adjusted my speedometer but today, at 3500 - 3600 rpm in 5th gear, my speedometer indicated 70 mph on my 06A.

4% - 5% error seems pretty normal for the Gen II FJRs.
 
Watching TV I saw Jay Leno riding his Gas TURBIN bike. If I remember right that thing idles at 10,000 RPM.

I was told that at an intersection in Hollywood a Lexus LS400 pulled up to close behind him. The very high exhaust temps leaving Jays bike melted a portion of the air dam under the front bumper. I would have loved to seen that!

It has performance heads/pistons/Mikuni HSR42 carb/Andrews TW31G cam/Dyna TC88-ignition/Kevlar clutch.

Yes it's an antiquated dinosaur, but quite entertaining and handles remarkable well for what it is.

The Avon venoms help , and 40 years in the saddle.

The FJR I'll be ordering soon isn't a replacement , just an addition.

The big reason for the FJR is it will allow me to ride further with less fatigue on long trips , and will be more enjoyable for winter rides .

I'm one of those guys that likes all types of bikes , each for thier own unique personality.

On a related topic, simply out of curiosity--while headed home from work yesterday along a stretch of I20 I was cruising at about 80 (taking into consideration the speedo inaccuracy I am assuming my actual speed was prolly closer to about 75). My tach was indicating about 4700-4800 on my 04. Is that about average for most everyone else?

What speedo inaccuracy? From what I have heard and read, FJR's '03 - '05, are spot on, with no slack to avoid a speeding citation, my '03 included. Confirmed by both stationary and hand held radar. The former were at no direct cost to me, the latter were expensive in money and time.

With '06 new final drive ratio, I do not know how close the speedo is to true speed over the ground.

Believe your tach. Check it against the gear/speed/tach chart in message #24

Like yourself, I purchased the FJR as an addition and it is now the primary ride but still enjoy taking out the HD. While my HD is of an earlier vintage by several years it should be comparable to your 2002 in ride. For me the FJR is a more comfortable ride but it took awhile to get use to the style of bike coming off a cruiser. But once occustomed to the bike the ride is comfortable and the FJR just eats up the miles by design. If you are 6 ft. or over, you may want to get a larger windshield for more comfort, especially if riding in winter conditions. Ideally use of the stock window in summer and plus size for winter. Really the two bikes are like comparing apples and oranges but once on the FJR it will just get better and better with the biggest problem is getting that silly smile off your face. I've been doing most of my rides between 4500 to 4900 rpm, showing between 86 to 90 mph. Nice to live in such an open state(not so many cops on the backroads).....

 
General highway rides at 3,000-4,500 in 5th.

But if I am riding twisties or working on technique, I target 7,000. Leaves me 2k up and 2.5k down without forcing a shift. I do a LOT of throttle management and engine braking combined with rear brake drag.

I also use a slightly higher idle RPM setting to help soften the blow when initially cracking the throttle out of corners. Found that the transition to be significantly smoother, but it does require riding a gear lower to get the same engine brake effect as a lower idle-TB setting.

Probably should just buy a PC, but Heidi has me saving money for ride gear instead!

I'm on the touring side of "sport-touring", mostly I'm in the 3000-4500 range. In any case, I've not got 1000 miles on it, so I'm not ready to "chase" it yet.

Speedo accuracy? On my '06, a rough guide:

speedo 30, GPS 27-28

speedo 70, GPS 67-68

speedo 80, GPS 76-77

speedo 90, GPS 84-85 (only a quick glance, looking for speed cameras more than the speedo/GPS or road ahead, and they call these "safety cameras")

For what it's worth, it generally needs more revs than my Trophy did, that had more low-end grunt, it would pull strongly from 2000 whereas the FJR needs about 3000 for the same effect. That I do miss, but gear changing is so easy with my flipper that it doesn't really matter. I've got to live with it anyway!

One of the things that I enjoy most about the FJR is its abundance of low RPM torque. Its like driving a car with a big V-8 engine, and because of that you don't have to rev the piss out of it to get moving.

In every day riding I seldom rev it over 4000 RPM.
