Fuel mileage

This may belong in the pointless, recurring threads section, but I was wondering what figures are bandied about for fuel mileage on the FJR. My primary riding buds are on ST1300s and they're boasting of 45 mpg+ at an indicated 80-85 mph, with 50 mpg+ at sane speeds. Any experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I'd suggest trying to search on +fuel +mileage and see the often discussed and rarely agreed upon subject.

For example, I've gotten between 26.4 and 46.1 mpg...all in the same trip. The former reading was by Area 51 where it was me, cows and antelope...and an entirely sane speed for conditions. The latter reading was after I wore out my tire and had to limp home through Oregon at sub-speed limit....again a sane speed for conditions.

Worrying about MPG for bragging rights seems kind of dopey to me, but if that floats ST1300 boats they can have fun with their high-speed weave while getting great mileage. :glare:

When I first got mine I was getting 42-43 city and 45-47 highway, and it seemed to be getting a little better each week. After the 600 mile service (performed by the local dealer) I am getting about 39-40 city; a bit more on the highway. Not sure what they did, but I am going to talk to them about it. I don't mind getting a little less mileage if the reason is things are actually running the way they should, but if it runs just as well readjusted and I can get better mileage I am for it.

got an '05 with 43k miles on it and I get 45+ mpg all the time and have gotten 50+ mpg on tours at 75-80 too many times to remember.

The FJR does well on gas if you control that right wrist - but there is no fun in that, right?

'05 with 15k miles and I get on average about 44mpg, although I have noticed on long (150 mile+) road trips at a constant 75mph or so I can approach 50mpg. The right wrist and it's sudden twists really wrecks the gas mileage on the FJR (on the other hand though it does wonders for you stress level!)

If I am twisting the wrist a lot I have been as low as 38mpg.

Duh! Now tht I passed the "break-in" I do seem to be rolling more - and having a lot more fun too.

2005 FJR1300 ABS - Average this year 44.07mpg...as you can see winter isn't good to me. BTW I live in the Gunshine state of Arizona and ride all year, I love the carpool lanes.

I started taking a new route to work, involving more WOT blasts rather than a fairly calm constant speed. About the same distance, just different types of traffic - 8 lane divided rather than a 2 lane. Anyway, for the first 3200 miles the dash was indicating an avg of about 42 and that's now at 39.5. Not un expected. On the two occasions i have been able to do any freeway crusing at about 80, it was about 48 indicated. Stock '06.

With gas slipping over $3.00/gal and installation of a PCIII days away, I was interested in finding out how what MPG penalty speed caused. I wanted a comparative "before" and "after" so now was the time. I tried to make the test as emphiracal as possible and I believe it is, at least in relative terms.

Method:

I used a running start at the chosen speed. The "average mpg" was reset at the start and recorded at the finish. The test run was 8 miles of very level road that formed a "U" shape thereby negating any wind effect. The throttle lock was tensioned before hitting the reset and there was about a mile runup prior to the startline to settle on the speed.

Temp 77f

Wind calm

Fuel 87 ron

Tires BT020

Rear 42psi

Front 39psi

Rider 225lbs.

PCIII RESULTS were obtained on a separate test day

Sorry to take so long but I got some results that I didn't expect so I re-ran the test in some cases twice to make sure I wasn't doing something seriously stupid. The mileage with the PC III actually went UP! One thing that made the test much more difficult was that this time try as I might I could not get a windless day so I gave up. Some winds were pretty brisk and resulted in large variances in the two runs. Ex: at 65 the results show 57.7. The run downwind was 62.2 while upwind it was 53.1 - 9 MPG difference! The FJR, at least with the new gearing, makes no apologies to anyone in the mileage arena!

There are many independant posts that have supported these numbers I now find out. At the time I thought I was providing some new insight. If you use the computer as a guage and do some drafting you would be amazed what you can do, even at 80+! And you don't have to be on their bumper to do it. Sure, the results improve but it's not worth a few bucks to become a trunk ornament.
