For those who want statistics that gun ownership decreases crime look to Kennesaw, Ga where it is MANADATORY that the head of each household own a gun. Very few people know that this has been going on since the early 80's. except of course for the local or should I say the absent crooks.
Fencer is correct. Kennesaw, a city in NW Atlanta, enacted this law on May 1, 1982, the Kennesaw City Council, passed a law requiring all heads of households to maintain a firearm in response to the Morton Grove, Illinois law(1981) banning private possession of handguns. Needless to say, Kennesaw, has some of the lowest crime rates and one of the safest cities in the region.

Secondly, when Florida passed the Concealed Permits to Law Abiding Citizens, crime went down overnight at least 25%. At this time the criminals directed their deeds against the known Tourist, since they were smart enough to know that tourist can't carry weapons!

I read when a firearm is used by Law Abiding Citizens, over 95% of the time, brandishing the firearm is ALL that is needed to solve the problem.

I don't know, If I have to show a weapon, it's to show how it works. I don't remember when, but I was taught not to take it out until I was gonna use it. That includes guns too.

"Walk softly and carry a big stick"

I ask again; if you guys were not allowed your guns, how would you feel? Vulnerable? No different? Safe in the knowledge that no-one else has a gun either? Totally lost without it?
I feel much safer with a firearm in my house. If local laws were different, I would have a carry permit, but that is not allowed here. In the last week, in the neighborhood that I live in, I was faced with a situation that I was really worried about because I was unarmed. It sucked.

Pump 12 gauge, pistol grip, shortest legal barrel. The sound of it getting racked will strike terror into any intruder, and may persuade them to leave a human-shaped exit hole in the nearest wall or window. It's a universal sound of impending doom.
My sister in law has a compact 8-gauge. It's not a 12-guage, but like mike says, hearing it cock surely will have the same intimidation factor. Plus I'm sure being shot by it would still hurt.
Well, yeah, since it's bigger than a 12, I'm sure it would do just fine.

I feel much safer, state law allows for firearms in and outside of my house (CHL.)

I enjoy trap, skeet, sporting clays, target shooting, hunting, varmint hunting and loading ammunition for various calibers of handguns and rifles.

Have had to dispatch a number of rattlesnakes on my property, front lawn, and ranch in Wyoming and last fall had to dispatch rabid skunk on side of my home.

Had bad situation happen in 2000 that ended well, having a firearm and CHL was instrumental.

Before I met the wife I never had a gun. Thought about a shotgun, but my last apt had 2 doors that I was always right near. So if they came thru a door I would have to either move alot or towards the offender. Then I got Sam and some BB bats out of the storage area.

Never needed any of it while I was home, but I did come home to a broken door handle once, after the new trash across the hall moved in. I asked if they might have "bumped" it w/ some furniture aqnd they said no, but they said it sounds like I have a mean, big dog in the apt. I guess they heard Sam bark when they didn't do anything to the door, because that's the only way he would bark. The door HAD to knocked or banged on. Not sure how it would've ended had he not been there.

I like handguns because they may save my wife's life someday, but for me they will cause more trouble than they're worth. Chicago has the same law Dc does, long guns, no handguns. That's whyI say they're more trouble than they're worth, not to mention, if I blast someone w/ the wifes gun, she gets in trouble w/ the dept for not securing her weapon. And we know what the dead criminals family will do with that kind of bait. Sort of a catch-22 for me, but that 8 ga sounds like fun.

when only real bad guys have them here.
So how did that ban work out for ya
The ban made no difference to me as I didn't have a gun, there was a lot of upset at the time from the folks who owned and used handguns for recreation. I think they were all compensated. I don't know if it has made any difference to gun crime, from what I hear and see on the news it has got worse.

EDIT...penny just dropped.....haw haw

Yeah, I had that backwards, I guess it's a 20 gauge, I know it's smaller than a 12. She only weighs like 110, I don't think she'd be shootin an 8 gauge handheld! Anyway, it's really compact, but I still wouldn't want to be shot by it!

My point, exactly.

Ponyfool's prision analagy sums it up quite nicely.

Bein' a country boy, I have packed heat at home, and in my cages, since age 16. Now I'm 65 years old and still packin'. Never was a criminal, so not concerned with what the law might think. Seems like there's something in the U.S. Constitution . . . .

My grandfather still goes deer hunting with a 20 ga shotgun, more than enough to do the job. He used to use a 12 ga, but at 85 yrs old his shoulder couldn't take the recoil anymore.

In response to the original question, I don't feel as safe in my truck over the road as I do at home with my guns. I own several handguns and rifles used mostly for target shooting, but I wouldn't hesitate to pull one out of the safe if the situation warrented it.

I personally don't own a gun of any sort (well, I do have several NAIL guns :) ), probably never will.

That said, I will defend the right to gun ownership for anyone in this country legally elegible to own one.

Has anyone simply tried to UGLY them to death?

I think it would work for me.

I'll leave the house's front door open tonight, and lay in wait.... like a spring gun.... and wait for a shadow to cross the wall. Maybe I'll even be naked...

Then, quick! Flick on all the lights and: "SURPRISE ASSHOLE!!!!" "ARRRGGGGHHHH", he screams and bounds for the door.

Damn, he got away.... but I think I dropped a leg on him....

I ask again; if you guys were not allowed your guns, how would you feel?
like Brittish vassals instead of USA freemen.
Justa minute...whats a vassal? do I need to be offended here? ;)

I don't think you need to take offense here feejer, the way I read that definition British Vassals and USA Freemen or both singing the same song.

"I Owe, I Owe, off to work I go.

To answer your question straightforward, Sir Knight, I would feel my rights violated, and would give serious consideration to travelling to a new world, where I could enjoy the freedoms given to mankind by the Maker, Himself. Oh, wait, that's what started the American Revolution, wasn't it? Bring the wife and kids over. We'll party, and shoot our .357 magnums in celebration! "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will own guns." (Who saiddat?)

I own a variety of guns and I carry concealed and keep them in the home and car. To your question I would not feel safe without them. We have home invaders, car jackers, murderers, etc running around over here just like you do there and I like knowing that I have the upper hand as in better weapon and better training than the BG's. And if government could get my guns away from me I would own a knife, sword, bow and arrow, club, etc.

You know, while married to wife number 2, I didn't feel safe with my guns. I just knew that one day I would wake up dead.
Hey Scab I don't think that you will "wake up" dead bro. :D
