Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

Jeff's bike did accelerate faster. I can't deny that. At the end of the passes where I got the jump on him he caught up to me every time.

Jeff, Do you think that your bike is faster because it's a GenII or because it's a Gen II that can breath better with a K&N and slip-on's?

I think my performance mods are the only reason my bike was faster.

It only makes sense that a stock Gen II would accelerate slower than a stock Gen I. Gen I is a bit lighter and has slightly lower overall gearing which should both translate to faster acceleration. The magazines also report faster 0-60mph and 1/4 mile times for Gen I. But then again, black paint has a lower drag ratio :p

I'm working on a program in my spare time that will once-and-for-all be able to show exactly how the slight change in gearing and weight affects actual amount of thrust caused by the wheel vs speed. I'll report the results as soon as I get something working crudely, but working just enough to generate a comparison chart between Gen I and Gen II.

I got a little impatient and used what I have so far for my program to generate some raw data that I could copy into a spreadsheet to make graphs:

(edit: graph fixed)

These are based on the gear ratios supplied by Yamaha and dyno results from extrememarine's stock 2009 FJR. The engine itself has not been claimed to have received any changes in performance over the years, so I think it's safe to assume that the torque curve has not changed. I assumed a rider+gear weight of 170lbs, and I used vehicle weight as determined by this post: https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?showtopic=133290&view=findpost&p=796884

Notice that the optimal shift points have not changed in terms of RPMs. This shows that the higher rev limiter on Gen I is not an advantage.

Barry (Bustanut) showed up to watch the battle, but he was too scared to race:

Man it's no wonder the wemin folk was hangin about our area..I be one handsome sumbitch ;)

jus layin back like a hawg rider.

:jester:
Did you even need the centerstand to keep the bike upright with that CT on there? :p
phroenips: Thank God that Bust's FJR isn't also chronically afflicted with "altitude sickness", just like THE JACKASS!!!

Ok... so the acceleration graph I posted late last night is slightly flawed (notes added to the post). I'll fix it tonight.

In the meantime, enjoy these unedited videos:

I just wanted to post that to see if any Gen 1 owner would bite. We have a winner!!!!
DOH! Thats it, one day your gonna a knock on the door and your gonna answer it, but you won't remember it.
That won't be much of a change for me. I was going to ask Bust-A-Nut if I could borrow some ninja sheep to protect me but then I remembered (after looking at some photos) that he has a Gen 1 and will probably take your side. I'm in BIG trouble. I think I'll hide out in Copper Canyon until this blows over.

Good Thinking Bill, worked well for Francisco "Pancho" Villa and his Army del Norte; when USA General Pershing and Federale General Huerta were looking for Generalissimo Villa and his Troops!

Has anyone on our FJR Forum ever noticed the fact, if you put a big, bushy mustache on HotRodZilla's face and a giant sombrero on his head, how he'd look exactly like General "Pancho" Villa?

I fixed my acceleration graph. My ft-lb to N-m conversion was all wrong. I also added an extra 170lbs to both bikes to represent a rider. More details in this post, but here's the graphs again...

So 2nd Gen'ers take heart. Using the above graphs, your bikes should actually be faster to 63 mph (for that split second when the 1st Gen guy has to shift into 2nd :p )

BTW - I realize that is not what the graph shows. Just kidding...
