Opinions on the 2008 I'm considering (and how much I should offer for it)?

Hey guys I'm new here, I went to my local dealer to look at a new 2010 FJR they had advertised. It turns out it had already been sold but they did have a used 2008 which caught my eye. I wanted to get the opinions of experts here as to whether this is a good bike and a good deal, and what I should offer for the bike if I decide to buy it.

It's a 2008 with ~21,000 miles on it. Being sold by the dealer on consignment.

Externally it looks very good, can't see any evidence of it ever having been laid down or dropped.

It has a few accessories, including heated grips (which I don't care about) and a throttle lock (which I could see some benefit to), it also has the mounting plate for a top box which I don't think is standard.

I was not able to test ride it but it seems to run well and the only thing that seemed off about the bike is the windshield squeaked pretty badly when it was being adjusted.

The sticker price on it is $8399, the dealer added about ~$250 of BS fees and after tax & license the dealer is saying $9500 out the door but making it clear I can offer lower.

Now one thing to consider I have an aversion to used vehicles (was burned by used cars in the past) and normally wouldn't even consider this but it does look to be in great shape. Still the lack of any sort of warranty on a bike with an unknown history concerns me.

My buddy thinks I should offer $8000 out the door, which seems a bit low ball to me (low ball is not really my style). But honestly I don't even know what's a reasonable price.

Looks like a good and clean bike. FYI, that's not the factory heated grips (not that it really matters), and the windscreen is aftermarket too. Looks like maybe a Cal-Sci.

I wouldn't worry about any problems, these bikes are rock solid. The 06's - 09's will have a recall soon for a electrical grounding problem, and that's really been the only problem on the Gen II's. There was also an ignition switch recall, and an ECU Altitude Fix recall which have been around for a while.

In fact, the only problem I see with this bike is the price, and even that's not too far off from what I would consider a fair deal. I never compare tax & license costs as those vary greatly across the country. But the $8399 + $250 bringing the effective price to $8649 is too high for me in this market. I'd want that at no more than $8k...maybe even something around $7600 or so.

check out some of the classifieds on this board too. I know there's an '08 in Northern Colorado...could make a good fly 'n ride! Not sure what the market is like in your neck of the woods. In April I bought an '08 AE with 4999 miles on it from a private party for $8400. Bone stock. The bike you're looking at looks to be in good shape. The OTD price seems a little high for my market, but I'd lowball 'em and see what you can find for a middle ground.

Top plate looks like it's from Premier Cycle Accessories. I think those are hyperlites on the rear.

Agree no more than $8000 Hard to tell from the pics about the tires. If it is actually on consignment

the dealer can say anything he wants about the price but the owner is really who you are negotiating with.

Ask if it has any Y.E.S. left on it and whine if it doesn't. Might be a bargaining chip.

In august 09 I purchased my 08 for 10,500 out the door, used, it had 570miles and the guy traded it in on a harley. I believe at the time this was a very good deal.The 08's addressed prior problem ares.

The grounding recall just came out last week for 2006 thru 2009.

I think 8,000 is fair also. I paid a little more for a 2007 with 825 miles on it, so that bike with 21,000 should be less.

Around here when I was shopping a well equipped 2007/08 was going at or under $8500 in the neighborhood of 5k miles. Your looking at a basically stock bike (no major money adders like a seat, new triple tree, trunk, etc...), but no clue what the market is like there.

You can't really argue taxes/title fees - but you can definitely argue the dealer tacking costs on. If they aren't giving you a 30 day warranty or anything just tell them they will have to be at a private seller's price and adding in $250 in fees on top of an already overpriced bike isn't going to cut it.

I agree that their number is too high. I paid $7000 (+$700 tax to California) for a stock '08 with 7,000 miles on it earlier this year.

I purchased a 2008 with 18k miles in April. The bike had several pieces of additional equipment and was in "as new" condition. The seller was in Oregon, we agreed on $8500. Prior to that I'd done quite a bit of research on ebay, Craigs List, and various on line sites.

Based on that research, I think the bike you're looking at is worth high $7K to low $8K before whatever taxes you face.

Above all, be prepared to walk...and buy a different one. There are lots out there if you are willing to wait.

Seems $7500-8000 is a fair price, you know the dealer didn't pay anywhere near that...

I wonder who's bike that was, there are alot of farkels on there that you really only see on the forums....

I'm guessing that's adjustable? Unfortunately as it was a consignment bike I was not able to test ride it

FYI I offered $8000 out the door and they came back with $8750, (they dropped the pre-tax price to $8000 and got rid of most of their fees), I'm debating whether to take it or walk away.
