I've used that setup for some time now and it has served me well. I've added a length of 1/2" velcro that wraps around both pieces for "insurance". The magnets work great, but never underestimate the power of a pothole!

I I had purchased the Y.E.S. extended warranty so it cost me nothing. I did sell my 14" FJR last December and purchased a lightly used 2016 RS. 

When I experienced the flashing cruise control light I tried cleaning/lubing front and rear controls to insure full travel. When that didn't work I took it into the dealership and they replaced the front brake light switch. Problem solved. YMMV

I did something similar back in early December for the same reasons as the OP. Traded in my 2014 A model for an extremely clean and low mileage 2016 BMW R1200 RS. Wanted something lighter and sportier that still had some touring abilities. So far so good. Looking forward to putting down some miles.

If you don't want to lay out big bucks on your 05' rear suspension, you might consider a Gen III OEM shock. Haven't check prices lately but I think you can pick one up in the neighborhood of $400.00. You might even find a like new take-off on one of the forums. Good luck!

I thought I read somewhere that Yamaha changed suspension manufacturers on the 2016 FJR. Aren't they now made by Showa? Maybe SkooterG might know the answer to that.
