I've used this same method repeatedly. Just barely break them loose with the forks clamped on the bike still. Be sure to use the proper sized socket to fit over the damper adjustment knob.
The distance around my hand is 8.5 inches if you measure across the tops of the first knuckles. These gloves will fit my hand. I personally opted for the next larger size in the end because I like a more roomy fit to allow for a thermal liner in winter riding.
