For those of you with experience having the plastic panels painted, how do those really come out in comparison to factory, and then durability? I've never had plastic on a motorcycle painted, so now I'm curious for possible future use.
I currently don't have any damage, but I do have that awful matte blue paint and it does stain and rub easily. So there's always a possibility that in the future I may want to repaint and gloss it up...🙂
 
I waited too long sigh...I contacted Gaurald last year about painting the top of my GIVI E52 trunk metallic silver match side covers and tail, $125.00 plus shipping both ways.

I have a OEM top box that I transferred from my previous bike to my present one. Its previous maroon colour would look very strange on my grey bike, so I took it to a local car repair shop. They colour matched it and painted it (from what you say, colour matching isn't important). It is a shop I've used before, I know they do a quality job. But not cheap.

It's been on my bike virtually all the time for more than four years, although only about 23,000 miles.

In one of those very rare moments, I gave the bike a quick wash a few days ago to get rid of a layer of Spanish bugs. The top box paint might have been done yesterday.

Ok, it doesn't get the hammering that the lower-down panels do, but it's had its fair share of bugs and occasional stones hit it (following other bikes over gravel roads can do that!). And I use it frequently for shopping and so on, so it's been manhandled a lot.

Tried to take some pics, very difficult. What might appear to be blemishes are reflections. But anyway:

I’ve had side panel repainted on my FJR from 2013. Did the repair work myself. Looked like new and barely a difference notable between the painted surfaces, also now 5 years later. Must say, I was pretty happy. Disappointing part of the story is that the bike fell again on the same side lately and ended up with some minor scratches 😱

So my presumption is that you would be repainting matte for gloss. Colour matching becomes moot. Even if you have half matte, half gloss, the colours will never look the same.

Last year I painted a couple of panels on my K1200S myself, previous owner had an oops. Not terribly difficult but you need the space and tools to do a good job. Honestly if I didn't point it out you would not be able to tell the difference between the factory and the repaint. Plastic is not hard to paint, after all nearly all bumpers today are plastic. Just don't cheap out on the paint, this is the least expensive part of the job!
 
I filed the insurance claim today. Correct, $1k is lots, but I think I’d regret not spending the $$ and having flaws I see everyday on my new bike. I’ll update when I have the repair estimate. Thanks for all the replies.
Update; Progressive insurance was great, and came in very generous at $4500, which is more than enough to fix all the cosmetics. Side note, this is the best bike I’ve ever driven, I love it!

I had a very slow-speed fall-over when I first got my bike, and Progressive paid off very well for me too. The covered every piece that had even the most minor scratch and didn't quibble at all with the shop's estimate.

Then, the next year my rate went up something like 30% as I remember. I called and was told it was because I'd made a claim. I pointed out that I'd been insuring bikes for 45 years at that point and this was my first claim ever and I figured I was probably still among the best risks they could insure. They said there was nothing they could do.

I shopped around and went to Geico on both bikes, and it was within pennies of being the same rate Progressive had charged before the claim.

I'm not trying to be negative, but it'd be interesting if you could check back when it's time to renew and let us know what happens.

Thanks. My premium renews in April, and I’m expecting an increase, but hopefully not 30%. I’ll also shop around if that’s the case.
 
Progressive was the company that quoted the FJR as being about $400 a year for full coverage when it first hit the shores. People who signed up were bitching left-and-right about bills coming in that upped the "estimate" to around $1600 a year.

I got a similar quote and went elsewhere.
 
I had an accident 2 years ago … totaling my early 87 Venture . Which i had over 100k miles and owned 30+ years. Safeco paid for the bike and over $3k of accessories. With the money i was able to purchase my low mileage 2009 free and clear. My rate did not go up due to the claim. Look at Safeco, a Liberty mutual company. Paying less than $250

Can confirm SafeCo as a good payer for homeowners insurance (roof/storm). Had them for about 25 years for everything by the bike but recently switched to USAA and saved about $1000+ a year on home/auto/bike.
 
I came out of the gym today to find my 2022 laying on its side in the parking lot. Hot day, and I thought maybe the kickstand sank into the asphalt, not the problem. No idea what happened, and no cameras around to catch what happened.
I didn’t file a police report. Insurance deductible is $1k. Clutch lever, side mirror/farings and chrome cover (not sure to what) took the brunt. Thoughts on repairs? I’m guessing the plastic parts can’t be buffed? Thanks in advance. Mark
