If the foam rubber grip puppies or grip buddies block too much heat from the grips, you may try tennis racket handle wraps or even better - silicone tool handle wraps like Grip Wrap from Tommy Grip. They don’t soak up water, probably conduct heat better than foam, are durable, and you can make the grips as thick as you want.
 
Because of this post, I just ordered from the upstate NY Original Grip Buddies. While I use XL gloves and liked the foam Grip Puppies, the outside diameter and circumference was a whisker too much. They did, however, let heat transmit and knocked down the 4000 - 4200 buzz before my 08 had a TBS.
I'll try this purchase in April while riding to 2nd gear recall appointment.
 
I also didn't like the thin grips on my 2nd gen,I carefully cut the oem grips off to not damage the heater wires.
Simply bought 2 pairs of cheap normal grips and installed throttle side grips on both sides.
 
I'm in the throws of needed maintenance and up-grading some farkles on my trusty Gen 1. One chore was to replace a pair of old solid rubber convex Grand Prix grips (Beemer boys loved them) that had worn flat in spots. They were shaped like the old Norton soft balloon grips sans the air chamber, but were solid (good heat transfer) sticky black rubber. Given that those old GP grips are now unobtainium, I finally found something similar on Amazon. They are GP style (much thicker in the midsection), made from a tough, solid, high-durometer silicone (heat transfer) and are as sticky as flypaper. Only drawback is the price ($26). For Asian stuff, they are good quality. Possible alternative?

I like Pro Grip 714. A little bigger than OE but much softer that helps squelch some handlebar vibrations. I install a pair and ride for a yr. Next spring I rotate them 180 degress. Then the next yr I replace again. I went to my local drug store and asked the little girl there for a travel size of the strongest hold hairspray they have. Shit holds like glue but breaks loose easily with a thin screwdriver worked under the grip and rolled all the way around.
