Hey everyone,

My first service was from a dealer, since I bought a 2009 FJR that was sitting for a couple of years. They did a full service, (tires, fork oil, seals, etc.)
Now I am getting ready to replace the engine oil myself.
Where do you buy your oil, filters, crush washers, from (in Canada)?
Lots of different pricing out there, including kits that all seem to be 1 liter short.
Appreciate your input.

I usually use Rotella T6 synthetic (diesel) oil from Canadian tire. Usually buy automotive oil filter from them as well (Mobil 1 M1-110). I don't usually replace crush washers but would probably buy a few from the dealer. Lots of people switch to using a non-crush copper or aluminum washer.
Some people aren't comfortable with a non-motorcycle specific oil but I haven't had issues. Alternatively, choose your oil and filter and buy from your dealer or on Amazon.
 
Amazon or Menards for oil. Amazon for a dozen wix filters at a time. Amazon for 25 dowty washers at a time.
 
As Ross alluded to no need to seek out "motorcycle specific" oils just, and please don't take offense if you know this already, stay away from any oil showing the symbol on the right.

Rotella T6 is motorcycle specific, since it has the JASO MA rating.
That rating means it’s safe in a motorcycle’s wet clutch. The only question with Rotella T6 is 5W-40 or 15W-40. I find the 5W-40 warms up quicker to the right viscosity for smooth clutch operation In my AE.
 
Like others here, for years, I've used Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 as my default. It is commonly available in Walmart, and if you pay attention, it can often be snagged at a cheaper price than some recommended motorcycle engine oils.

Absolutely, the JASO MA rating is pretty much the most important thing. Avoid friction modifiers or you'll have a slipping clutch and regret that oil change. :eek:
 
Rotella T6 is motorcycle specific, since it has the JASO MA rating.
The oil is advertized as diesel-specific. The fact that it is MA/MA2 means that it is wet clutch compatible and won't cause clutch slippage. There is a lot of discussion and controversy on the suitability of Rotella T6 in motorcycles and no need to re-hash it here. Do an internet search on Rotella T6 and Motorcycles and be prepared to spend a week or more.
I have a half million kilometers of T6 use in four different Yamaha motorcycles with no engine or clutch issues ever (includes 295,000 km on my '07 FJR).
 
I use the 15w40 t6 in the fjr. Shifting would get terrible after 1000 miles with the 5w40. No issues with the 5w40 in my fz1.
15W40 T6 is not available in Canada... Just the 5W40 (and 0W40). I never had shifting issues with the 5W40.
 
So it sounds like any quality 10w40, (or 5w40) will work just fine. Do you all feel the same about the oil filters? Or do you all prefer a specific brand like K&N?

I would stay away from automotive oils - even if they don't say "energy conserving" or similar. Some people use them without issue - do you feel lucky?
K&N filters are probably OK for the most part but there have been issues with the nut welded on the end - sometimes leak. I like the Mobil 1 filters and even the higher end Fram filters are OK (cheap ones are crap). Wix is decent, Hiflo etc. Might want to check out the Canadian Tire brand - I haven't used one on the bike and don't know the baseplate design. Just make sure it has appropriate specs for the bike and that the base plate is an "innie" not an "outie". Bosch used to be a favorite until they went to the convex baseplate. Same with Purolator.
 
Here in Oz (warmer climate), I mostly use Penrite 15W-50 Diesel engine oil, with JASO MA rating.
It has added zinc, better for the valve train. I buy it in 10 liter cans.

Herin lies the controversy of using motor oils intended for diesel engines. If you have an engine that burns a tad bit of oil (all engines burn a bit by design, some more than others), too much zinc (ZDDP) can poison your catalytic converter. I believe when the API SL standard came out, ZDDP was limited to a maximum of 800 PPM for this reason. I can't say about Penrite, but Rotella T-6 has 1200 PPM of ZDDP. Interestingly, Rotella T-6 has a JASO MA2 certification and one of the requirements for MA2 is that the oil has to be safe for catalytic converters. How that is determined is not something I could dig out. API seems to think an 800 PPM limit for ZDDP is the determining line, and JASO doesn't seem to have a limit, just a statement. If you have a bike that doesn't have a catalytic converter, there is no controversy. The extra ZDDP in diesel motor oil is not an issue. But, that's not the case with the FJR. Like RossKean, I have thousands upon thousands of miles running T-6 without issue.

Another oil filter that works is Mahle OC707, about 12 bucks on Amazon (thanks to escapefjrtist for that tip).
 
Amsoil 10W40 motorcycle oil. Bosch 3323 Premium filter. Note that Bosch has 3 grades of filters, the lower grades are measurably lower performing. A close second to the Bosch is the Fram XG7317, which has the advantage of being readily available at Canadian Tire. Like the Bosch, Fram has multiple grades of filter, the XG designates the "Ultra Guard", which is a good quality filter. Stay away from the lower grade PH7317.

BUT!! Either of the above, and possibly any available aftermarket filter, won't fit the FJR as is. The oil filter thread adapter nipple must be turned on a lathe to take about 0.050" off the face of the hex. Otherwise the filter won't screw on quite far enough and you risk a leak at the gasket. The 3323 used to fit, but Bosch changed the can to the same shape as all the other contenders a few years ago.

Crush washers don't need to be replaced every single oil change. They can be annealed indefinitely.

Walmart usually. I use Mobil 1 4T motorcycle oil and M1-108 Mobil 1 filters. If you prefer the longer filter that'd be the M1-110

I did use Amsoil 10w40 motorcycle oil and filters for a number of years because I had a friend who was a dealer, and I wanted to help him When that was no longer the case, I started using Rotella T-6, but it got hard to find during The Great COVID Hysteria of 2020, and I moved to the Mobil 1. The bike seems to shift better with Mobil 1 than anything; I expect I'll just stay with it.
 
Canadian Tire. Whatever motorcycle-specific oil is on-sale at the time. Same for the filter. I never had to change a crush washer and I never had a leak at the drain plug.
