    Snowy Winter Michigan Ride

I actually thought my elbows were too low. Viewed from the side, I think your elbow is supposed to fall on the line from your shoulder to your wrist, then your hand should follow that same line. I was surprised to see that I was looking through the corner, though. It's very hard to avoid...

    Snowy Winter Michigan Ride

It's been snowing here, but I wasn't going to let that stop me from riding. I gathered up my wife, my brother and a friend, and we all headed one of our easiest twisty routes, thinking that the snowy conditions could make even an easy route difficult, so we'd start easy and see how it goes. We...

    Mid-week getaway to west Michigan

I should mention that even though it is not as powerful as a 600cc sport bike, it is much more enjoyable to ride as a commuter/sport-tourer than something like a CBR600RR due to the mid-range torque and the way it is geared (and the seating position, of course). It actually accelerates faster...

    Mid-week getaway to west Michigan

I've been getting by just fine without heated gear. I ride down to the mid-30's (not long trips; just local commuting, etc.), and it's usually my feet that get cold. I suppose some heated socks could add some comfort. My wife would probably just consider heated gear too much of a hassle...

    Mid-week getaway to west Michigan

I got a good deal on a 2-night stay at a bed & breakfast on the west side of Michigan, but only during the off-season and mid-week (we would have preferred to go about 2-3 weeks earlier if we had a choice). I convinced my wife to take the motorcycles. This was her first trip on her FZ6R. Here's...

    One HAWT 20 year old

... I think I'll just leave this one alone. It's too easy.

    finally, Finally, FINALLY!

My FJR just emerged from hibernation this morning. I spent about 2 hours last night with a shovel carving a path through the ice on my driveway so I could get to the street. It was worth the effort, because the commute to work this morning was so much more enjoyable than driving the car! I...

Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

I fixed my acceleration graph. My ft-lb to N-m conversion was all wrong. I also added an extra 170lbs to both bikes to represent a rider. More details in this post, but here's the graphs again...

Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

Ok... so the acceleration graph I posted late last night is slightly flawed (notes added to the post). I'll fix it tonight. In the meantime, enjoy these unedited videos:

Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

I got a little impatient and used what I have so far for my program to generate some raw data that I could copy into a spreadsheet to make graphs: (edit: graph fixed) These are based on the gear ratios supplied by Yamaha and dyno results from extrememarine's stock 2009 FJR. The engine...

Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

I think my performance mods are the only reason my bike was faster. It only makes sense that a stock Gen II would accelerate slower than a stock Gen I. Gen I is a bit lighter and has slightly lower overall gearing which should both translate to faster acceleration. The magazines also report...

Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

For anyone that still thinks that it was only my prior experience that made my bike faster, study this time slip: The reaction time is not included in any of the numbers, except for the final number that shows how much the winner won by. In this race, Jason had an awesome launch, and mine was...

Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

But then I might lose, and that wouldn't be any fun. It's more exciting to stir up some controversy with unfair comparisons :D I'm really wishing I had mounted my camera to look across the track at you to capture just close some of those finishes were as I caught up with you. What we really...

Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

Wow; nice 60ft time. I wish I could do that. If I got a 60ft time in that range, I'd probably be down around 10.7s for the ET. Let's just say that Lapeer is not the smoothest/cleanest/best-maintained track, so it could have something to do with the traction losses.
  15. UselessPickles

Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

Jason mentioned that he lost traction a few times. I was being a pussy and not launching hard, so I never lost traction this time. I have lost traction a few times in past visits to the strip. I'll post a screenshot of the data log from my best run later tonight so you can see exactly how much...

Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

It's important to note that most of the time/effort/money I put into the changes mentioned in those threads has been reverted (luckily it was some spare insurance pay-out money from my totaled 2007 FJR, rather than hard-earned and saved money). I no longer have the "Wicked Webby" air box mod. I...

Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

Did some investigation... MCN reports the wet weight of the 2003 at 637 lbs: https://www.mcnews.com/mcnews/articles/Model_Evaluation03033.pdf Yamaha reports the wet weight of the 2010 at 641 lbs: https://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/products/modelspecs/180/1/specs.aspx (the 2011 is listed at...

Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

"JUST" 0.249 seconds (the difference between our best times, not counting reaction time) is actually quite significant in the 1/4 mile. That comes out to about a 53 foot lead. Differences in 1/4 mile results are deceivingly more significant than they appear. For example, Jason's best run was...

Proof that GenII is faster than GenI

Yeah; I know :) But it is nice to know that basic mods will more than overcome the extra weight and taller gearing disadvantages of the GenII. GenI is 30 lbs lighter than GenII, and the 2003 is another 30 lbs lighter. Makes me wonder how fast a 2003 with similar mods would be.
