    My probably stupid idea...

The salt bags work fine, but I found that (3) 40-lb bags were required. I now use a 2x4 assembly under the oilpan with a floor jack. I brace it up with bricks because my floor jack leaks down overnight.

    Cheap, effective earplugs

I have tried a lot of different types of earplugs because my job occasionally requires me to be around loud machinery. My experience has been that earplugs with the rounded ends very quickly back out of my ears and then become totally ineffective. The cylinder shaped plugs are the only ones...

    Best fuel mileage EVER!

I have noticed a marked improvement in mpg with elevation. My last tour in Colorado I got a consistent 50-54 mpg when riding at 5000+ ft.

    OH 536

ohio 536 is one of my favorites. Southeast Ohio has some of the best road.

Has Anyone Removed All The Paint From Saddlebags

Yes, the irony was not lost on me. After the cursing subsided, I realized how ironic it was. "The very paint I was trying to protect", to paraphrase a Seinfeld line. The tape was a 3M product, perhaps the stickiest tape I have ever seen. It was a clear tape, thought that would look better...

Has Anyone Removed All The Paint From Saddlebags

Shortly after I got the FJR I ruined the paint on the saddebags. I was going on a trip and I didn't want abrasion from my tailbag and other things I was carrying to damage the paint. I put tape on the tops of the saddle bags to prevent this damage. It worked, but when I pulled off the tape...

Planning a trip through the UP of Michigan

I recommend a stop, if only for an hour, at the Sylvania Wilderness area. Take a short hike into a virgin northwoods forest and see what it is supposed to look like. The diifference between a mature forest and the logged-over and replanted scrub forests that typify the UP and northern...

    Trimming Stock Windshield

I found the stock shield on my '05 to be the worst of both worlds. Not nearly enough protection when it is cold or raining, and when it is warm, it is too big to get enough airflow. Plus, at any speed over 25 mph, it was deafeningly loud, up, down and anywhere in between. I bought a Cee...

    James Bay Highway

I did it a a couple of years ago. There is a gas station/restaurant sort of stop a bit over half way there, 235 miles or so. I filled up with gas at the start and kept my speed down to the posted limit of about 50 mph. Three reasons for this: enjoy the scenery, stretch the mileage, and the...

Free National Geographic Scenic Byways Book

I found out about this on an MX-5 forum I frequent. Mine showed up about 4 weeks after I ordered it. Glossy, color pages, very nice. I don't know who is paying for it, but it is free. Can't beat the price.

Audiovox vac can - which works?

I didn't install a reservoir. The CC works fine without it.

    16,000

I did mine when I changed my fork oil at around 20,000 miles. It was a waste of time. Everything looked perfect. There was plenty of clean grease on it. I probably did more harm than good by opening it up and potentially allowing dirt to get in. Until you open it, you won't know for sure...

    Battery died today...

When my original battery crapped out in spring, 2005, (the original only lasted 6 months, despite being on a battery maintainer during winter) I was desperate for a battery and called the local Batteries Plus store. I was shocked to find they had one in stock. It is still working fine.

A Plea To People To Pay Attention

The parts at the end about not seeing/ignoring bikers are certainly true; there are a lot of bad, inattentive drivers out there. I don't think they target motorcycles, though. They are just as rude, inattentive, etc. when it comes to cars. It is just easier to see a car than a motorcycle when...

Dairyland made me a cheaper offer

Last year Gieco dropped my annual insurance premium from $256 to $196, out of the blue. My guess was they were getting more data showing FJR claims are lower than they originally planned.

    ABS Brake Test

Back brakes are easy. As a previous poster said, just step down hard on the brake. If they don't work, the worst that will happen is you will leave a skid mark. The front brake takes a bit more faith, because locking the front wheel will result in going down very quickly, probably faster than...

    C14 Engine Update - Long

Very nice testing and writeup. I was considering a C14, but pretty much ruled it out after the test reports I read indicated no real advantage in lower rpm, real world type of riding. A few more horsepower on the top end doesn't mean much to me. I was convinced, before reading any actual test...

    Moto Camping

+1 on the air mattress. I tend to sleep at least half the night on my side, and the self-inflating mattresses just do not provide enough cushion for this. If you stay flat on your back all night, I suspect a thermarest would work fine. Many others are quite happy with them. +1 on the 0...

    boost with a car??

I have jumped started my old V65 Sabre with a car, but not my FJR. I don't see how it could be a problem. I say do it. I would.
