2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

I posted a similar scenario to some of the staff on Friday when I first heard about the accident. I find it almost impossible to believe that he was riding without a helmet. If the deer impact caused the helmet to come off and there was any time period between the impact and other riders or...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

LOL! I think Tom will post the results right after they have been announced at the finsher's banquet tonight.

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

Bob can indeed ride. In the '01 IBR, Terry Pipes, Al Willis, and I we were leaving the bonus at Pat Widder's place in Ojai, heading to CP#2. Bob came up and asked if we knew the best way to get to the CP. I told him that I thought I had the best way plotted on the GPS. He wanted to ride...

    Nighthawk 700 "S"

RenoJohn, I had a red/black one. Got it after coming off of a Yamaha Seca 750. The CB700SC had hydraulic valves, but a really high rpm redline, very smooth engine, hydraulic clutch, adjustable handlebars (for tilt and pull back, very cool), air cooled alternator, long shaft for less jacking...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

IIRC, someone on the ldrider list came up with about 56 or 57 of the 101 starters wearing Aerostich products (1 or 2 piece Roadcrafters or Dariens), with the remaining riders wearing a variety of other gear. Don't think I have seen a detailed list of the others.

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

Thanks for the detailed update, Tom. I figure that Alan is feeling the weight of the world on him at this point. Hope he can pull it together and have a good final leg.

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

quote] In the event that one does not run an aux tank, is it allowed to carry say a 2-3Gal jerry can, just in case a planned gas station is closed or has crappy fuel as we've seen happen already in this rally? No. <snip 03 rule> Actually, it would be more accurate to say that the rules...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

Actually, if you are running a stock tank under 7 gallons, you are not required to keep a fuel log, so there is a paperwork benefit. Warchild probably know for sure, but I think there were around 6 or 7 bikes without fuel cells at the start. FWIW, Bob Hall won in 2001 without a fuel cell.

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

On more tidbit about Turbo Dave from the starting line: The morning of the start, he got in to a mild panic because of the ticking sound that his FJR was making. He soon had a crowd of FJR folks over to listen to it. As some were debating between valves and camchain tensioners, I think it was...

Am i the only one that missed the whole iron butt principal

Some, when asked that question in the recent past, have replied by editing the IBR tag line of 11 days / 11,000 miles to read 11 days / $11,000. But of course, that is if you already have the bike. In actuality, it can be done for around half that.

Am i the only one that missed the whole iron butt principal

I was poking around in the forum while waiting for the next update on the IBR and read this post by Cal24Master. Very well stated. Very well indeed.

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

The sport bikes are being piloted by two French Canadians, Jacques Titolo on the ZX1200 and Jennyfer Audet on the CBR1100-XX Blackbird (which is actually blue). Tie in to this forum: the aux fuel tank on Jennyfer's XX is one of the aux tanks that carried Warchild and his XX to seven BBG's...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

When I referred to the riders missing the call in bonus, I was agreeing with your point that it is a grind and for any rider to try and add blogging or tweeting to the already high level of difficulty the riders are experiencing would be unwise. I was in NO way implying that they missed the...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

With all due respect, I think you may be confusing two separate events in IBR history. There was a ZX11 rider that got into trouble for talking to a reporter and bragging about some of his claimed exploits. It is my recollection that the resulting damaging and inaccurate article that was...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

The day 5 report just came out. It looks like eliminating the distraction of blogging was a good idea on multiple levels, especially since it appears that a large number of riders failed to calculate the correct time to make the call in bonus. IronMaiden is correct, if effectively...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

Well, not exactly. In the '01 rally, Key West was worth nearly 30,000 points and was definitely not a sucker bonus. While Bob Hall won the rally by doing the nearly impossible and getting Prudhoe Bay on the third leg of the rally, for all of the other riders that took the Prudhoe Bay option on...

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

RE-5 update: Just heard that Alex has replaced his electrically dead RE-5 with an 85 Wing, which should technically keep him in the hopeless class. Also saw some photos of Barry's dead RE-5 in FL. Looked like the drive chain came off and maybe broke the transmission case, dumping all the oil...

Do not reply here, go to the IBR thread. The FNG (me) inadverently posted this to the wrong place. Go to the IBR thread to read it. Sorry for any hassle or confusion.

2009 Iron Butt Rally - Official Daily Reports

Yep. It was explained at the banquet in Spartanburg. I will leave it to Warchild to make that funny tidbit public.
