I had the exact, same problem with my Cali 2012 until I stopped my (really bad) habit of "topping off" the tank, which send raw fuel into the vapor recovery system. On hot summer days it ran so bad on cold start up I thought my baby was broken for sure. Now I leave an inch or so below the top...

Lift the tank. Get a good light. Look at the top of each throttle body; there is a rubber cap covering the port used to connect a manometer tube. Those caps get old and crack. They were disintegrating on my 2012. And they will leak air. The leak rate will vary with temperature thus...

Ran into my riding buddy's FJR last September on a RTE in Oregon, due to my inattention. Not as bad an outcome, and not a good way to make friends. Glad you're both OK. Part those FJRs out and get back on the road!
