I have the same problem. Got an OBD adapter and the cheapest Harbor Freight code reader. Worked like a champ. Took all of three minutes. Should I want more capabilities than a read, display, clear unit, I'll have to look into fancier stuff.

This has been a great thread! A lot of good info. Since my cel was cleared 2K miles ago, I've had no return of the cel. I pay attention to the key and it's position and haven't triggered the sidestand safety function. No other worries with my FJR. Been riding as much as possible.

Hope I don't need this info. Took a month for Yamaha to supply my dealer with software to fix my bike. Want to be ready to squawk if needed.

I was told when they cleared my cel that it was two separate fault triggers involved. One was the sidestand safety (indicating an extended sidestand while in gear, engine running) and the other was an engine stall fault. I did trigger the sidestand once just after picking up the bike. The...

My dealer finally got whatever it was they needed to read and clear my cel. Took them a long time to get whatever it was. They were probably quite tired of seeing me and calling. Mama Yamaha needs to pony up some cash for this dealer's labor costs.

Post up if you get the cel to come on in the 1500 ish mile mark. Mine did. Got resolved, but was still a pain for a new top of the line bike. Somewhat bad Yamaha, Inc.!
