New Owner - Wild first ride!

This is an opportunity to tell them to install a right angled bolt in valve. Makes one handed pressure checking and adjustment much easier. You need the metal version with rubber washers. And if I could, I would want to see the inside of the tire to look for damage. Depends a bit on how fast...

What year Goldwing foot peg will fit 2023 FJR (with slight modification)? For rider foot peg, not passenger.

On my 2008AE I added crash bars - wonderful for when I drop it in my driveway. Anyway, I mounted a set of aftermarket foot rests on those and when I feel the desire on longer straights I simply stretch my feet forward. I feel like I'm on a Harley or old school chopper. BTW, the rear crash...

    ABS rear brakes engaging

I had the opposite problem on my 2008AE. Apparently I rested my foot on the brake. Felt the bike be slightly sluggish but not significantly and the brakes overheated, I came to a stop sign but after stopping they totally let go, front and rear. After cooling down they came back but I still...

    overfilled oil?

I think I remember using a thin plastic hose - fish tank or hospital type - to snake into the filler hole and pull a little out. If it is long enough you won't get it in your mouth. :) Also, I've changed the oil filer without draining the oil - the new filter had a slightly raised center screw...

Are Rifle Fairings still in business or gone the way of Bike Bandit?

So sad to hear this. I have the oversized Rifle on my 2008 with the wedges and it is great. The wedges give it just enough extra sweep that it still works well at highway speed, though I admit I bring it part way down when I go over 65 mph, to reduce the stress on the mounts.

    Brakes failed

I'm going to have to check on the JASO MA/MA2 rating, if I can find the bottle or my order. However, I've been using this for a couple years now. Prior to that I used the Rotella 5 Diesel oil and while that worked I did feel a little more slip. The bike has 32,000 miles on it now and seems a...

    Brakes failed

I took it for a couple rides and at this point everything is working as usual. I'm convinced I boiled the fluid by resting my foot the rear brake. On the recent rides I made sure the toes were not on the brake. Thanks for the brake fluid changing instructions. Since things are working I am...

    Brakes failed

So I just picked up the bike. The shop did NOT change the rotors, pads or fluid. 😲 They opened the master cylinders and said the fluid looked good, no indication that it boiled, no indication of water. There is 4/32 of pad left all around and the rotors are not warped and have plenty or meat...

    Brakes failed

Got voice message from the shop. Basically the problem was what you guys suggested here - I boiled the brake fluid. When I dropped it off, the shop explained that boiling the brake fluid in back can affect the front because they both share the same ABS unit. They are not totally separate...

    Brakes failed

"Mobile 1 10w-40". I did not know they had "Racing" oil. Now I am not sure if it said "High Mileage" or just 10W-40.

    Brakes failed

BTW, this is my bike. The screen is a Rifle +2 (barn door but great). The white things in front / bottom are home made wind deflectors (idea stolen from my Goldwing using small cutting boards from WalMart.) The crash protectors are nice to have and saved the bike several times from falls when...

    Brakes failed

So I think the rear brake boiling explanation might be on the money. Looking at the disk brake I see discolored spots. I don't think the brake was stuck - I think it was rider error - I think I must have rested my foot on the brake pedal and not realized it. I am developing neuropathy in my...

    Brakes failed

This is 2008 1300AE - no clutch, just shift version. What has me puzzled is that the bike came to a stop at a stop sign, and only after I released the brake lever and applied it again did it fail. Then I tried the rear and that was also failing. The other symptom is that before this, while...

    Brakes failed

My bike would not accelerate when the RPM was below 3000 rpm in 4th and fifth gear but worked fine if I down shifted and got high rpm. I came to a stop just fine but when I reached for the brake after letting go it collapsed. No pressure front or back. Got in the stopping lane and turned off...

    helmet speakers

I use the under $10 BlueTooth Onn ear buds from WalMart. I have to watch the cord that joins them so it does not catch on things. Have to get them deep enough in the ear for good sound blockage, and spread the modular helmet a bit when putting it on. Good for talk radio. Still get some noise...

    The dreaded whine - questions

It's the mini Jet engines they used to replace the pistons. My 2008 AE has the whine but after a while I stopped worrying about it and now have 31K+ on it. Yes, it is annoying, seems to be decreasing with wear/age (or my failing hearing) and earplugs help. They real key is to not worry about...

    Touring Screen

I see you already moved but this is an FYI for anyone else looking. After a deer inconsiderately broke my original, I had the shop install a Rifle screen. I forget the size but I measured using a tape to figure out the size I wanted and it was around Medium. I'm 5'10" with a 31" inseam. It...

    Final Gear Oil Question

While all indications (and logic) say use 80w90 GL-5 oil, I confess that at about 10,000 miles ago I used the same oil that I used for the engine - 10W-40 or 15-40 Rotella at the time. Now I use Mobile 1 75W-90 gear oil for the rear gear and Mobile 1 10W-40 for the engine (getting hard to find...
