    Compatibility subframe

I just ordered a sub frame for a 2009 AE from yamahapartshouse (Babbitt) and I believe the part number is the same as for 2012, maybe others. I guess I'll know if it fits in a few days.....

    New Rotella Product?

To Mikesgts1000: I've been running nothing but Rotella T-6 full synth in my 2009 SE since it was new and it now has 85,000 trouble free, sticky clutch-leverless miles. BTW, I LOVE my SE, had a 2004 that I accidentally traded for the SE and it had 71,000 miles with nothing but T-6. I use it in...

That same damn front end clunk question....

Well, the dead horse is beaten. And the clunk is gone. What did I do, you ask? There were several factors at play here: First, due to the way I went about installing the lower race in the steering head, I failed to get it seated completely. It took a mirror and a light to determine that...

That same damn front end clunk question....

I appreciate the measurement, will check it against mine. As Fred W mentioned, if the roller bearings are 'thicker' than the ball bearings, it would cause my issue. As for getting the correct kit, I have no way of knowing. The AllBalls site shows them fitting the FJR and the number I got was...

That same damn front end clunk question....

Geez..... I only have 168 posts, not over 5,000, but I'm on my second FJR and around 30 motorcycles with many steering head bearing changes behind me. I DID THE WORK.....I trust me more than 95% of the 'mechanics' out there. And I know enough to remove the lower race (with dremel tool and...

That same damn front end clunk question....

Checked the rotors and the calipers (to make sure I didn't forget to torque them down), put it on the jack (wife too light too) and no play in the forks/steering head. Actually released a little torque (down to 15#) on the steering head bearings as the 'side to side' movement of the wheel was...

That same damn front end clunk question....

Time to wake this old topic! I was told by my dealer that my steering head bearings were bad (he quoted me $1000 to fix them....) He demonstrated the issue by holding the brake and rocking the bike against the suspension. Sure enough, there was the unmistakeable 'clunk' of loose steering head...

FJRF009.4 "Spider"/Intermittent Ground Wire Failures 2010 and Later Research

Yamaha was in on it from the start of the YCCS failure. I am not as intimately familiar with the wiring as you so I don't know which 'spider' failed, only that it was "up by the #1 cylinder". I'm not sure the recall did fail but it sounds like it to me.

FJRF009.4 "Spider"/Intermittent Ground Wire Failures 2010 and Later Research

I just 'stumbled' across this thread but may have something pertinent to add. My 2009 AE had the original 'spider' issue fixed under recall in 2011 with about 6,000 miles. I don't have any idea what all was changed out but I know the entire wiring harness was NOT. Fast forward to December...

AE only, intermittent paddle shift failure

I also approached the service manager with the question of the possibility that the button was not replaced and he confirmed that it is a one piece item. The photo by mcatrophy indicates that it is a unit including the housing and the wire harness. My housing looks original but what do I know...

AE only, intermittent paddle shift failure

The alignment is certainly something to keep in mind but I'm sure that is not the issue here; no 'lazy' shift, just no shift at all. And the dealer had the mechanicals apart while trying to find the culprit. As for the RPMs not being high enough, these failures come long after the bike is...

AE only, intermittent paddle shift failure

I have experienced a paddle shift failure several times over the last few months, 5 times to be exact, when shifting from 1st to 2nd. My dealer couldn't duplicate the failure and after consulting with Yamaha, replaced the switch (this was after the 4th failure and while the YES was still good.)...

'09 AE won't run after starting

Cold idle is about 1600 once it catches and continues to run, hasn't changed since new, warm idle is right at 1000, no problems there. I'm betting on the 'cold idle' wax motor thing myself. I've replaced the rubber vacuum port caps with plastic, they seal well and don't crack like the rubber...

'09 AE won't run after starting

Well, that is not exactly true. It starts easily and dies immediately. It will do this a couple times until, with the throttle held 'open' a bit, it catches and continues to run. Then this morning I noticed that it was not running on all four for a bit. Temp was 52deg F. Has been doing this...

Removing the throttle bodies to clean them?

So I guess you didn't get time to search it. I did but didn't find anything. And btw, I spent the night in Kamloops on my way back from AK, temps were in the 90s (F). Nice lake, reminded me of Blue Mesa Reservoir in Gunnison, Colorado. Same semi-arid country with pine trees not far away.

    Starts then dies

I think I posted this last spring but can't find my thread if I did. At any rate, I had a problem with the bike (09 AE) starting and then dieing. I found that if I gave it more throttle as I started it, it would not die but I don't like high revs on a cold engine. I did a throttle body throat...

Removing the throttle bodies to clean them?

It is an AE, 'fast idle' is 1500. Much higher than that and it'll take off when ya don't want to! But anyhow, I removed the air cleaner (time for a new one anyway), no small job on an AE, and sprayed Seafoam into the throttle bodies. Would have been nice to have had a third hand to run the...

Removing the throttle bodies to clean them?

Hmm, I read through all that fast idle thread and I don't think I want to mess with the fast idle wax thingys. But it does run poorly when cold (banging and thumping and dieing. Still gonna try running the Seafoam through the air box to get at the butterfiles. I suspect mine look a little...

Removing the throttle bodies to clean them?

I picked up a can of Seafoam spray, has a long 'hose' with a curve in it, supposed to slip it in between the airbox and TB through the rubber connector I guess. But injecting it through the vacuum ports had not occurred to me.....are they ahead or behind the butterflies? Guess I'll check it...

Removing the throttle bodies to clean them?

I had my '09 AE in the shop for a little warranty work a couple weeks ago and the service manager asked me when the last time I did the valve check. I told him I did it at 26k as per schedule. He asked me if I removed the throttle bodies and cleaned them when I did the valve check...
