GF wants bike -- help wanted

I don't know how I found this old thread. I normally just push the 'new posts' button and see what's there. Oh well, it's still good advice. o_O

GF wants bike -- help wanted

It is a good idea to start out on a dirt bike, but not everyone lives in an area where that is possible. My wife learned on my Kawasaki 500 back in the 70's and never crashed, but she never used that bike like I did. My oldest daughter started on a SV650S, second daughter on a Ninja 500, and...

    The problem with old bikes…

Very nice Vincent. We easily get spoiled by the capabilities of our FJRs. I suppose there are many modern motorcycles which have the same effect. Still, I appreciate vintage machines, historic homes, and many other things from the past. A lot of people must agree with that. Just look at the...

Looking for advice on beginner sport bike

My three daughters all used to ride 'sports' bikes. One had a Ninja 250, another had a Ninja 500, and the third had a SV650S. The 250 was ok, but not really capable of prolonged highway riding. Either of the other two bikes were fine. They look like sports bikes but are a lot easier to ride...

    Africa twin on Nerburgring (sp?)

Watching the speedometer I saw him exceed 220kph. Thats over 135mph.

    Curtiss Zeus electric motorcycles

Not much space for batteries. Even with the terrible ergonomics a rider could probably sit on one long enough to need a charge. The Livewire recently announced by Harley has considerably more battery space.

    Tenere 700 World Raid

The chances of seeing this in the US is improving as the big singles disappear due to environmental regulations. I have to assume that twins will replace the big singles from all of the manufacturers.

Which ADV Tourer? BMW GSA vs Super Tenere?

You can read all the reviews you can find, and ask advice from your respected riding friends, but there is no substitute for the way a bike feels when it feels right to you. It sounds like you found the one for you and I hope you enjoy it as much as you enjoy your FJRs. In the next couple of...

The one BMW thing I miss

A few years ago there was a ride organized by Beemerdons which he called the Colorado Cluster. It was mostly a BMW group but included FJRs. I attended and met a bunch of very friendly BMW riders. Some expressed brand loyalty, but most were open minded and interested in the other bikes. There was...

    More Toys to Choose!

Very nice, except for the price. Honda has a reputation of introducing new bikes with lower price tags and increasing the price in subsequent years, so it is not likely that the MSRP will go down The CRF250L was a bargain the first year it was available. Maybe a gently used one in a few years...

    Time for a new bike...

Regarding the Tiger, I have never ridden one but I have talked to several owners and they all like them except that they put out a lot of heat. I know you do not like the Africa Twin, but that would be my choice over the Tiger. My son-in-law sold his Super Ten to get an Africa twin and liked it...

    Time for a new bike...

You really should look for an opportunity to ride the bikes and then decide. I say that because I thought I wanted a Super Ten a few years ago but changed my mind as soon as I took one on a demo ride. It simply was not for me.

H2 SX SE Sport Touring bike

It sure is ugly. It might not look as bad in a different color scheme, but maybe not. When I was younger the horsepower would be enough to get me to want one, so I think it will sell in the right market.

No Yamahas at Minneapolis International Motorcycle Show :(

Yamaha and KTM were at the NY show, but the only Ducati's were customized ones at a small custom display. OTOH, MV Agusta and Aprilia each had full displays. I don't remember them being in NY in the past couple of years. I didn't notice any booth babes at any of the displays, but that may be...

No Yamahas at Minneapolis International Motorcycle Show :(

Yes, Yamaha was at the NY show. They had their usual large display, but they brought last year's FJR.

    Dealer Profit on New Bikes

The same is true for automobiles. If you walk in to buy a new vehicle and pay more than dealer invoice you are paying a premium. Many dealers will show you the invoice so you know what 'they paid' for the vehicle. They make their profit on other incentives from the manufacturer.

    Fingers crossed

I like it from what we know so far. I wish it was lighter so it could compete with the KTM 690R.

    Flip-Flop riding

I have lead many rides of small groups, primarily because I am the one with the GPS and radar detector. I have no objection to someone who wants to go faster taking the lead, either temporarily or for the rest of the ride. It happens sometimes. I don't remember ever actually planning a switch of...
