Very sorry to hear of your accident. My thoughts are with you and Tammy. Praying you heal well and quickly. Thank you for posting the details. If posting the details influences just one person it could change a life.

    SE Washington Day Ride

Hi Dan06FJR. I lived on the westside for 62 years. The best uncrowded riding these days is south of Olympia between I-5 and the Coast Range. Delphi road, Waddell Creek road, Independence road, Bunker Creek road, Lincoln Creek road, Pleasant Valley are quite nice. This time of year they are...

    SE Washington Day Ride

To be sure the are the environment over here is harsher than the west side.  It is colder, hotter and there is more smoke over here.  Despite these challenges I enjoy myself riding over here.  The traffic on the west side is just no fun and that is not seasonal.

    SE Washington Day Ride

The traffic south is Spokane of awful - stay away. The roads are a bit straight but I know where the good stuff is. 😁

    SE Washington Day Ride

Thank you.  I like the raven color.  It is wrapped in vinyl film. Yeah the traffic south of Spokane is just brutal.  😏 Some of the roads are a bit beat up but no so much as it slows me down.

    SE Washington Day Ride

Today I rode the FJR about 270 miles in 6.5 hours. I choose a route south of Spokane through the Palouse wheat fields then on to some of the channeled scablands scoured out from the Ice Age Floods 15-20000 years ago. It was about 45 degrees when I left at 10:00am and I was happy to have my...

Scab Lands in SE Washington (the state!)

The scab lands in Eastern Washington are a result of the Ice Age Floods scouring the land of all loose soil about 13,000 - 15,000 years ago. Using Google Maps you can easily see where the water flowed. Here is an image from Google Maps. The brown area is where water flowed carving out the...

    Epic Tour of Central Idaho

    I remember when I a 450 was a big bike. ☹️

    Epic Tour of Central Idaho

It is a matter of how much comfort you require.  DR650 and KLR are widely used for world travel.  The bikes will go all day on a paved road.  I can ride it 300 miles in a day.  More than that becomes tiring.  I have mine set up with a Russell Day Long saddle and a Madstad windscreen.  Think of...

    Epic Tour of Central Idaho

The tracks are posted so if an rider wants to give it a go on the FJR then by all means go for it.  Well I don't care to take my FJR on gravel roads and find the DR650 is well suited for dual sport rides.

    Epic Tour of Central Idaho

Day 5 On the way to the restaurant last night we watch a couple of fawns cross the road in Darby Montana. One made it and the other for some inexplicable reason decided to follow at the last possible fraction of a second. The car already in evasive maneuvers had no chance to avoid the stupid...

    Epic Tour of Central Idaho

Day 4 First let's talk about Senas. We had two 20s and a 10s. I had the owners manual on line and read up on how to get them to connect. It worked but too often after stringing out and regrouping the damn Sena's sounded like we were talking under water. Anybody know to to fix this? We had to...

    Epic Tour of Central Idaho

Around 2007 and 2008 I road a 1000 cc Vstrom on a couple of the Idaho Backcountry Discovery Routes (IBDR). Great fun but I grew tired of the Vstrom as it was a bit much on the gravel roads. 15% out of control 100% of the time and someday My Time was Gonna Come, cue up some Led Zeppelin, when the...

Spokane WA to Fort Phil Kearny Wyoming

Day 5 Today I had some choices. Ride 280 miles Hamilton Montana and finish the ride off the next day, ride 530 miles to get home via Hwy 287 Hwy 93 to Missoula then slab it home, or ride 619 miles via Hwy 287 Hwy 93 then Lolo Pass home. It was Sunday and Slow Slow Pass wasn't talking to me...

Spokane WA to Fort Phil Kearny Wyoming

Day 4 Today the plan is to ride over Beartooth Pass, again oh darn, across Jellystone's Lamar Valley to see more bison, then taking a leap of faith on down to Old Faithful and on to West Jelleystone for the night. The prevailing wisdom is to avoid Jellystone but this year tourism is down so I...

Spokane WA to Fort Phil Kearny Wyoming

Day Three I pack up and ride into downtown Sheridan for breakfast determined to avoid McDonald's and breakfast in the parking lot again. Find a place with a parking spot right in front. Sweet. It is small coffee shop serving breakfast. Good choice. Great coffee and a darn good burrito. The...

Spokane WA to Fort Phil Kearny Wyoming

Last winter I read The Fetterman Massacre: Fort Phil Kearny and the Battle of the Hundred Slain by Dee Brown. It documents the battle where 81 men where lost in December 1866. A very good read to learn about US relations with the Native Americans. Out of this I decided I wanted to visit the...
