I am considering replacing the reflectors on the side bags with high power LED marker lamps and I opened up the bags expecting to see some attachment points and saw none, are they attached from the outside?

...are they attached from the outside?
They are self adhesive backed reflectors.

There are *LOTS* of how-to's for removing the reflectors and emblems. This >>LINK<< contains most of the common suggestions. You can substitute fine mono-filament fishing line for dental floss.

There are some very bright 3M reflective materials and pre-cut decals that can substitute for the reflectors if you decide not to both drill (water intrusion) and hard wire the LEDs (can't remove the bags easily).

As a final note, should you have a tip-over the reflectors make a bumper that protects the bags.

No holes through the bags to run lights. Just double sticky tape. Since the bags are double-walled, drilling them could compromise water tightness and leave you with the problem of figuring out how to feed power to the bag and retain the ability to remove the bags quickly.
