the days of no data acquisition, no high-tech tires that are made specially for each rider, no launch control, no traction control....the good old days

 
I remember watching that race on the tv. They were experimenting with multi compound tyres even then.

There was some talk about that particular race being set up for maximum entertainment value for Brit viewers and potential sponsors. Sheene and Roberts apparantly agreed to only actually race for the last 5 laps or so, the rest of the lead swopping was for show, hence Sheene having time to make the hand gesture. Notice how they leave Will Hartogg towards the end of the race, when they actually started trying?

I don't know if its true or not but the story fits.
