You mean Ferndale,Ca not Ferndale, Wa....correct?

There are 4 motels all within stumbling walking distance from The Eel River Brewing ...good food, gas and right off 101

You got it right Doug. Motels seem a little more reasonable if I am willing to stay a little further away. (Fortuna or Eureka)

It seems Eddie is correct about riding north a little further to 299 before heading west. I have been researching

different routes. Including heading south on 101until 20W. kind of "Not convenient " place to ride from is what I

am finding. The rider that I was reading up on missed the 80 hour mark for a successful ride. I am shooting for

the Gold version which only allows 67 hours.
Tony, where do you want to exit California headed east? That is really the big route question.

BTW Hwy 299 is crawling with the fuzz, JSNS

Cops, work trucks, motor homes.... HWY 36 is the path less traveled.

This summer I will be attempting a "Cape To Cape" ride (Cape Mendocino, CA to Cape Hatteras, NC)I will have very high fatigue level already, so I am looking for safest route even if it requires a few extra miles

To Clarify: The starting point is the Cape
I would have thought 36 also but the above statement of “high fatigue level” changes things. 36 needs a fresh rider, it’s like riding the Dragon but 10 or 12 times longer so instead of 318 curves in 11 miles you’re looking at around 4000 curves in 140 miles. My vote is 299 slightly above the speed limit then 44 where you can pickup some time, then 395 to Reno to 80.

I think it's splitting hairs to go by estimated time for Hwy 36 vs 299, but I know that with a fresh load of fuel, I can beat the time using 36 because I won't have any traffic, police or other issues clear to I-5. The most important factor is to check for construction along both routes. Any one-lane restricted traffic will absolutely kill your running time. Hwy 299 has more speed enforcement, heavier traffic, the CHP in Weaverville, and more likely to have construction zones. Current conditions definitely favor 299, but that can change.

Use this page and insert the route number for any road restrictions (1, 299, 44, 36) https://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi?roadnumber=299&submit=Search
