Have any of you GenIII owners installed Iridium spark plugs in the new generation bike? I have a set of NGK Iridium CR8EIX plugs I bought for my prior 07 and sold the bike before installing the plugs. Do any of you know if they are the correct plug for the GenIII? I've gone to the NGK web site and cannot find a corresponding Iridium plug for Yamaha FJR1300 2013-2015. Appreciate any advice on this.

The ones you have are the wrong ones for your GenIII. They are different lengths. Haven't heard of anyone finding iridium plugs for the GenIIIs yet either.

This is true. I believe Fred may have found the plug part number but no one seems to carry the plug.

The CR8EIX plugs work just fine.

I rang NGK in Australia and was told it was ok to use the CR8EIX instead of the CPR8EAIX-9

There are no CPR8EAIX-9's in Australia, only in Japan.

I have the CPR8EAIX-9 in my 2013. Autozone online was my ordering source. Runs just fine.

Yes, the CPR8EA-9 is the stock plug. Street price is $4.50

C = 10mm thread

P = Projected Insulator

R = Resistor

8 = Heat range 8

E = 19mm thread reach

A = Special Design

-9 = 9mm gap

So a CPR8EAIX-9 would be the iridium equivalent. Unfortunately there is no such animal. The closest you could come would be CPR7EAIX-9 (street price of $11.50), which is one heat range hotter.

I'm betting that the stock plugs will last 25k miles to the first valve check. I don't want my plugs to last any longer than that. YMMV

Fred,

I just went and checked my box...damn if they aren't the CPR8EA's...maybe thats why they sent me a full box of 10 when I paid for 4...I had better start paying closer attention to plugs next...whew. I never gave them a second thought....just pulled them out of the box and popped them in...

Called NGK. They recommended SIMR8A9. $60 for 4. Haven’t put them in yet. Anybody use them.

Per my prior post, I waited until the 25k mile valve check to change the plugs and they still ran and looked fine. There is no need for iridium plugs on an FJR.

So anyone who has ever met me knows I am a man of science; deeply committed to the application of the scientific method in everything I do..... they call me "Mr Science". So, I was determined to put an end to this ridiculous debate about the impact of using the iridium plug in the FJR. I designed a test in which I ran one iridium plug along with three OEM plugs in the other three cylinders. The cylinder with the iridium plug was selected randomly by one of our cats. Now, I know that I should have conducted a double blind study, but I realized it would be dangerous to ride with a blindfold on and Spousal Unit simply would not do it, so I rode the bike while squinting as hard as I could..... trust me I could barely see. Well, the difference was quite noticeable. Every time the iridium plug fired the bike would surge forward like the crowd at the Rueben Run banquet table; it was barely controllable. This alone was undeniable proof that iridium plugs are the answer to all our motorcycling needs, but was I satisfied? Well, no, I was not. Having put to rest one ongoing debate I decided to add some premium fuel to the tank and settle another tiff. This time the difference was utterly fantastic. Each time the iridium plug fired there was this deep, satisfying and powerful thrust as the bike was launched forward. I felt like I was filming a porn film as it was not unlike the feeling that Bust describes having when he is "grooming" one of his pet sheep.

Well there you have it. Two of motorcycling's most contentious issues resolved with scientific method and logic. Next I am going to add Amsoil to the crankcase and see how that impacts performance.

Did you know that the cops can confiscate your bike if they see you "stunting?" I mention this in case you're considering inflating your tires with nitrogen.
