Don't think it is fake given the coverage by the MOTO GP and World Super Bike sites.
I think he may be to the point that a reasonable recovery is not going to happen and the best outcome for him is something other than recovery.

He was definitely in an accident, but the report of his death at this time <appears> to be fake.

I was there is 2006 when he won at Lagnua Seca and went on to win the MotoGP title. Hotter than hell that day. People were dropping like flies.

Nicky had a great win! What a shame to lose him.....
