SPECIAL BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR OF MOUNT RUSHMORE

We have obtained special permission for 12 of us to be escorted to the top of Mount Rushmore, on top of the heads, the morning of Saturday, Sept. 22. Of the 4 million people that visit Mount Rushmore each year, only a few hundred get this opportunity, and usually they are well-connected VIP's and politicians. We will hold a drawing Friday evening, Sept. 21, to determine who will be selected for the tour. You will have to be present to participate in the drawing.

WHAT ELSE TO DO THERE:

You mean besides getting together with your buddies, kicking tires, telling lies, and enjoying your favorite beverages? Custer is in the center of the Black Hills, which has legendary motorcycle roads. From Custer, an FJR rider can take off in any of four directions on twisty and scenic routes.

North: Mount Rushmore (live cam), Crazy Horse, Deadwood (gambling), Devils Tower, Sturgis, Rapid City (live cam), scenery, and miles of twisty roads.

East: Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, buffalo, scenery, and twisty roads. Badlands (live cam)

South: Wind Cave National Park, buffalo, Hot Springs, Agate Fossil Beds Nat. Monument, scenery, and twisty roads.

West: Jewel Cave National Monument, cave tours, scenery, and twisty roads. (Hot Springs live cam)

Nice pics and announcement. I'm getting excited all over again. And I've been talking with you the last couple days about this.

Banquet and hat/shirts stuff will not be coming until after the first of year. This is just to help people start thinking and planning vacation time. So let the planning begin.

Thanks for stepping up. Black Hills sounds go to me. All of those people bitching about super-slabbing it, just need to crank that throttle open and see the country. The Black Hills has great roads and has some great site-seeing places.

Not just a meet, but an adventure.....

Dana
There ARE ways to get to the Black Hills and minimize the super-slabs. If you are coming from points southeast of the Black Hills, consider coming through Nebraska on 2-lane highways and avoid I-90 through SD and I-80 through Nebraska.

From the Omaha (I call it Ohmygod) area, you can jump on US 275 to US 20. Take 20 all the way to Chadron, then north on US 385 to Custer.

Or, from Omaha you can slab it west to Grand Island on I-80, then take state hwy. 2 to Alliance, then north on US 385 past Carhenge (be sure and stop!) and stay on 385 to Custer. Hwy 20 is an official "scenic route". To see Carhenge, detour off 385 north of Alliance, and take 59/87. It is 1-2 miles north of Alliance.

You could come one way, then go back the other. Both routes go through the Sand Hills in Nebraska, which are fairly nice. Hwy. 2 is lightly traveled; US 20 has a little more traffic. Both go through occasional small towns.

From points east of the Black Hills, an alternate to I-90 through SD is 18/46/50. They go all the way across the southern part of SD just north of the NE/SD border. I've never taken this route, but I'm thinking it would be better than that damn I-90 through SD. A friend of mine travels that way occasionally in a cage going from Hot Springs to Yankton, and says it's her preferred route.
A reminder from a previous thread.

And don't forget Carhenge north of Alliance, Nebraska on hwy. 59/87.

FYI, I just tried to call and make reservations, and they asked if I could call back on Monday or Tuesday, as they are still working on the group rate details.

(see the Nov. 24 edit in the first post, #1)

There was a glitch in the reservations system at the motel, and we had to change the dates to Sept. 20-23. You can now make reservations for Sept. 20-23. Sorry for the confusion.

Very cool!!!!!! Hope the weather holds next year for you guys. Will go directly from WFO 6 to Sturgis next summer. Very nice presentation.. Mike from Rapid City So. Dak. My Ca. plate used to read sdakkid. I know those areas like my own back yard. I have ridden every inch of road in those areas. You will love em.

CFO 2007 riders should be packing their cool weather gear. On good days the temps will make it to 70 or maybe even 80 on a rare occassion. For planning purposes assume daytime temps between 58 and 68, evenings between 35 and 45. Frost is very possible. Cool roads and warm sticky tires make for some great riding. Traffic will be almost non-existent and most large tourist venues will be yours alone!

Just made my reservations for the 20-23 dates -- busy schedule prior to this, but will try to make it.

Here is the information I got from the National Weather Service and posted in another thread:

Here are the average highs/lows in Hot Springs, SD, which is about 25 miles south of Custer:August: 86/53

September: 77/42

October: 64/32

The actual temperatures can vary quite a bit from these numbers and the last few years have been warmer than "average".

Most of the rest of the Black Hills is higher in elevation than Hot Springs, so the temps there will be a few degrees cooler. Early to mid-September is normally very good for bike riding, temperature-wise. And, usually there is very little rain in September, averaging a total of 1.3" for the month. May through July gets three times that amount each month.

Called to make a reservation but an automated service said they were closed until March 1 , it said to leave a number if you wanted to make a reservation . I guess I will hold off until March 1st.

I am planning on attending tho.

Mac
