I have an oil filter that does not want to come off. I managed to dent it up pretty good trying to remove it.

It doesn’t leak yet but I want it off. Any special tools or homemade tools I should try?

Any suggestions are welcome
 
The large screw driver is the east way. Before you drive the screw driver through the filter take an awl pick and punch a hike in the lower outer side of the filter to drain the oil. That will prevent the mess.

After you punch and drain the oil from the filter, you can use a hammer and a sharp chisel to make a cleft in the outside rim of the filter at the base. Switch to a blunt chisel or a drive punch to do the real work, driving the oil filter rim counterclockwise. You only need to break the oil filter loose, then you can unscrew it by hand. You may need to repeat these steps at a few places around the rim, so don't worry if the metal tears at anyone place.

In the future, apply some of the drain oil (because it will be handy) generously to the new oil filter gasket, and hand tighten only to install. The lack of oil on the old gasket probably has caused your problem now.

I come from an aircraft background, and I like safety wire. Aircraft oil filters have a punched tab for safety wire, so I do not feel like my concern for oil filter security is out of place. Our oil filters do not have that tab, so I use a large screw-type hose clamp around the oil filter. I think this large clamp was sold for use on a clothes-dryer vent. I put heat-shrink tubing on the band part, to give the clamp a good grip, but I suppose wrapping the band with a long spiral of electrical tape would do as well. I install the band clamp with the screw adjuster hard against a bolt-boss in the case, so the oil filter cannot unscrew, not even half a turn. The clamp needs to be only tight enough to grip the filter solidly; it is not sealing anything. A long common screwdriver (or a stubby) will tighten the clamp; I say that because I have Canyon Cages protecting the engine. HTH.

Use K&N filters. I use a KN-148 on my 05 FJR. It has a 17 mm nut on the end of the filter for easy removal.
 
Channel locks or pipe wrench. I have tried the screwdriver through the filter thing, and turned the screwdriver, only to tear the metal filter in half. Just make sure the pipe wrench or channel locks are near the filter base. You need to be careful to not gouge up the motor castings, and you will only be able to turn it a couple of degrees at a time, but it will eventually turn enough to twist it off. Good luck. And, yup, hand-tight works just fine when you put your new filter on.
 
I only tighten to the recommended spec. I think . 12ft/lbs ….with the oem it ends up being when the filter case contacts the engine plus a hair more
 
Yep, me too. Oil the gasket, hand tight, no reason for it to loosen on it's own (you ain't ridin a vibrator, jsns)..
I do hand tight but use a rubber strap wrench to give it a SMALL tweak because mild arthritis means hand tight is looser than it used to be. Still have never had to resort to heroic measures to remove any filter I have installed. Never had one leak either. (Generally need a bit of mechanical assistance to remove - strap wrench or conventional oil filter wrench.)

Note: The K&N filters with the 17mm nut appear to be convenient for removal. I have read about issues with leaking around the nut. Some have attributed leaks to using the nut for installation - should still be just tightened by hand with nut used only for removal. .I have also seen comparative filter autopsies that didn't place these in the upper tier.
 
Used this trick on Harley’s as the filters can be hard to get to and the engine heat can weld filter to engine, Use a socket type oil filter tool in size closest to oil filter diameter. Drill 2 holes on each side of top of socket then take two sheet metal screws and screw them into filter through the holes drilled in top of socket. This will hold filter tightly within socket and allow you the torque to spin it off.
