I can't tell you "what's best". I can tell you what I have that works for me. All leather and large rectangles.

Yo Toe,So I read your comment to mean that you've gotten the Rick Mayer.  Are you going to post a review or even just your comments on the new saddle?
Saddle will be built at the ride-in next Saturday 11/12. I'll definitely post a report & review.

Well, lemme give you this perspective: in May, 2003, I took my Blackbird (with it's Rick Mayer seat) on one of the most extreme Iron Butt runs I've ever done, an event known as "BLISTER".
Hey WC,

As my build date draws closer, my anxiety over getting the "right" saddle grows larger. For some reason, I recall that your Blackbird's Rick Mayer is leather while your FJR's Russel is vinyl.

Is this correct and, if so, do you think that contributes to your preference for the Rick Mayer? I know the story behind (no pun intended) the waffle pattern on the Russell and I've currently got the "WC" style Russell on order. But I've been thinking that perhaps, for what I do, full leather would be better.

Does anyone else have a strong preference one way or the other on the question of leather vs. vinyl on a Russell? I'm sure I'd want leather on a Rick Mayer.

Cheers,

Jim

My first was velour with vinyl sides (Wing). My current is all leather. Even though the Wing had the potential for a more comfy seat (all that real estate), the FJR turned out to be much better. I attribute it to a better understanding of how to describe what I didn't like about the OEM seat (experience) and the leather.

Got my Russell today!

Too soon to really tell but if feels good.

I'll post pics later in the week.

You didn't do a ride-in, Doug? And did you order the waffle jobby with the blueberry maple syrup?

No time for a ride-in so I did the group Buy. I got the WC-Waffle-Butt with a backrest.

Subject: Russell Seat Group Buy

Now is the time! The 2005 Group Buy is ON!

Dates are the month of December 2005, first come,

first served.

You must have your seat into Russell with all the

forms, pictures seat pan and payment before December

31st, 2005. Keep in mind that they are closed for part

of the holidays, so I personally would get it to them

before Dec. 15th, 2005.

You must write "2005 COG GROUP BUY" in the payment

area of the order form.

Then manually mark 10% off your order WITH THE

EXCEPTION OF SHIPPING AND TAXES.

This COG Group Buy is good for all seats they work on,

regardless of model. So if you have an FJR, ST, etc.,

the discount will be valid. Ride in appointments are

also discounted, but must be arranged well in advance.

Russell’s contact info is:

Order form

https://www.day-long.com/order_01.pdf

Russell currently has enough work to keep them busy

until December 7th, so your seats would be done in the

order they arrive. Turnaround will be based on volume

of seats that come in. The word got out to the FJR and

ST boards, who will also be joining the COG group buy.

So we are looking at about 25-30 seat orders. I would

suggest getting your seat in before December 1st to

get in earlier in the build order. Heck, for some the

riding season is over as of Thanksgiving.

Russell has a two year warrantee on their seats, some

of you asked if repairs and rebuilds are part of this

group buy, unfortunately they are not. BUT I strongly

suggest that you contact Katy at Russell

1-800-432-9566 and check about warrantee or other

repairs.

You provide measurements of inseam, height, weight,

riding style, pillion usage, plus pics of you and

pillion sitting on the bike, then you send in your

stock seat base pan, with or without the seat cover

attached. Make sure you remove the mounting

brackets on the back of the seat prior to sending,

those are worth their weight in gold since you can't

buy them separately.

On your order form you will fill out stich pattern,

single or dual custom seat, seat material and credit

card info. In about 4 weeks your seat is back and you

get to ride, break it in for about 1000 miles, then

decide if it needs additional customizing.

Costs are all located at https://www.day-long.com

Neither COG nor I have any financial goals, gains, or

personal interest in Russell or this deal, besides the

fact that I personally love my seat. Took me from

multiple 500 mile days to multiple 850 mile days. Had

back surgery last year, so my daily range went down

some, but I just installed a modified Utopia driver's

backrest on my Russell and it works great. BTW - some

folks have ordered the Russell Driver's Backrest and

complained about it's appearance. Be warned. That's

why I did the Utopia backrest, which can be removed

and only shows a small mount on the seat crown. You

can check out that modification in the appropriate

folder on my website.

Once again, I do not work for, nor am I a

representative of Russell Day-Long seats. DO NOT SEND

MONEY OF ANY KIND TO ME. I am just a COG member who

negotiates group discounts when I can. You will work

directly with Katy and the nice folks over at Russell.

Here is what Rick Mayers says about Vinyl vs Leather

Vinyl Hot, Vinyl Hot oh did I mention Vinyl is Hot.

Leather breathes so your butt stays cooler in the summer.

I have my Rick Mayers in leather and I love it.

I have had Vinyl on all my other bikes and this is my first leather and I absolutely know that for me leather was the right choice. Very nice.

Got my saddle today and put it on immediately. It's a wonderful fit without adjustment. Hoooray!!!! :D :D :D
