...I shouldn't buy one of these:

Being my B-day and all, I've been scrounging around the in'nernet for sumpin' to buy myself (other than Skyway's peg mounted De-Thirstalator® )and this damn thing keeps showing up in my searches for some *unknown* reason! :dntknw:

Now, some of you may know that I harbor a keen interest (need?) in making Prudhoe Bay within the next year or two and I've been eyeballin' the GS, Uly and Strom1K with which to make the trip. (Having found myself graveling one too many times on the FJR, I have determined that this ain't the machine for such a ride.) I know it's a BMW, but dangit!, the Strom and Uly just feel so, well, cheap. Too, the Uly is a tiny little critter compared to the others, quality is suspect for the ancillary bits (controls in particular) and the Strom is just a plain, big ole yawner.

So, my logic dictates that the Uly gets ruled out and though the Strom gets high marks for price (I could farkle the shit outta it for the difference of the Beemer), it just can't compare to the overall effect that the BMW offers. I'm not going out today and buy one (and that raises the whole new v. used conundrum) and prolly won't until I have a better handle on a trip date, but you all are pretty well versed in things two wheel, so I thought I'd slip a Quill Gordon upstream to see what it drags up.

Sorry, Nut, but I don't have ANY reasons to give you. Agree with your analysis of the Uly, but the 1000 V-Strom seems a very capable bike for exactly the kind of trip you're contemplating, as long as "ugly" isn't an issue. I'd like to have THAT Beemer in my garage if I didn't already have 2 bikes I have no intention of parting with.

BTW, happy B-Day (even if some of us would prefer not to be counting any more.)

Because the Cadicllac Escalade Truck you'd consider buying to trailer queen this thing to Prudhoe Bay isn't long enough to hold this beast without leaving down the tailgate. We know you have a delicate tushy and need it in heated leather on the haul road.

Re: the Buell. Heading onto rough highway, size will be in your favor.

I really like the Beemer as well, but feel I would be way too hard on it to last any length of time. And I can't justify the stealer prices they command when there are so many other good options out there for far less $$$. :angry2:

And don't rule out the upcoming new Triumph Tiger. This bike I'm sure will be popular.

That new Tiger was in the running until I found out that it is now a 'street only' machine. No longer does Triumph consider it a dualie. :dntknw:

True, $8890 a year is covering the FJR payment fine, but to go Duke? Well, besides not wanting to be on CNN because of a Grand Jury indictment.....it could be any, all, or a combination of things:

1) I might be able to be bought.....but the price hasn't included the requisite number of zeros.

3) Warchild would kick my ass for buying a BMW and listening to you.

2) My mom would kick my ass.....for being an ass.

4) The ho's around are cheap......but really, really ugly.

5) I want to get to where I'm going without my final drive grenading and catching Alaska on fire.

....come to think of it. #5 should be the reason you don't buy this bike. This could be your bike in 50,000 miles.....oh wait. The picture is an 1150.....yours would be a new model and could break in 10,000 miles.

Because you don't take a motorcycle off road that has two hugh horizontal cylinders sticking out that are screaming:

"Go ahead, fall down and break me off!"

Just not the right engine design for that activity in my opinion.

In my book there are these types of bikes you should be considering for your ride to Alaska.

BMW R1200GS or R1200GS Adventure

KTM 900 Adventure

They are best equipped to handle the ride, and have the best performance and quality in the market. Personally, I'd get the BMW only for supportability.EDIT: Dcarver says the KTM is more reliable and I don't argue with him.

I went and rode the new BMW's. The brakes have been refined and they rock. The final drive issue was reportedly fixed in 2005.

You know, that's something I have wondered about since I first saw a boxer BMW engine decades ago: just how well do the cylinder heads and such stand up to crashing?? I don't think I've ever read anything about it being a problem, nor anything saying it isn't. Just curious.

Anyways, I am assuming you are speaking of the BMW R1200GS. If that's the case, the only thing I have to say is buy two - so I can have one. An R1200GS will most likely be my next bike and will be in addition to an FJR. I rode one recently and it spoke to me. I had a huge shit-eating grin after getting off. (Pun intended) It will most likely be a used one to try to avoid some if the $$$$, but I WILL have one.

I have also ridden a friend's old V-Strom 1k and I know lots love it, but it didn't do anything for me at all. Didn't speak to me in the least.

Keep me in mind for the big Prudhoe Bay trip. You thinking of doing the IBA ride, Prudhoe Bay to Key West? That one is definately near the top of my to-do list.

As for you Iggy, those photos are of a BMW with only like 17,000 or 18,000 miles IIRC. That is a concern, but I would still get it.

And as for the rest of you and crashing................Crash Bars! Bueller?

My regular riding buddy has one of these pups and I've put a few miles on his. It's an odd steed. Feels so awkward compared to normal street machines. Tall. Minimal protection. Feels like a big pricey dirtbike.

If you're inseam challenged, NO WAY.

To ride to Alaska and north to Prudhoe Bay has always been a dream of mine. I have read many stories of rides to Prudhoe Bay and from pictures I have seen of the road north the GS would be the perfect bike. If you manage to do this I am going to be soooo jealous. “Go for it TWN” Happy Birthday!

Oops, my mistake. I clocked the trailer and motorcycle in the same photo and got all giddy at the keyboard. At least the final drive fluid in the picture looks sort of clean on it's it way out and onto the ground.

BTW SkooterG, As much a$ you want a G$, IMO your waaaayy to hard on a machine to con$ider this an option. forgetaboutit now and $ave yourself from inevitable bankruptcy. :dribble:
