During an oil/filter change on my Honda car I removed the SuperTech filter and the gasket broke loose from the filter. It never leaked so it must have come loose during removal. Maybe I tightened the filter too much over 5,000 miles ago.

Anyway I've noticed that some are installing this filter on their FJR. It's probably fine but don't overtighten it. The gasket can stick and come loose during removal.

Gaskets coming off filters is not unusual upon removal..they aren't glued in just make sure you get it off and dont double gasket....

+1
Who cares what happens when replacing it, just don't over tighten it to where it leaks after installation.

No leaks no worries. ;)

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but FWIW, in doing some searching for an oil filter for my Father's minivan that WalMart tells him is the same as our ST7317, I stumbled onto this site. I'm not sure how old his observations are, or if I have a Mexican version on my FJR, but it seems as though the SuperTech filters aren't getting any better. :glare:

Good post Zorlac.

Is the site reputable? I didn't see a date of when the OP updated with the newer version info.

I have not bought any ST's in a few mos, but I have not seen this new packaging either.

Hmmmm.....

I always dip my finger in the new oil I'm about to pour in and put a thin film of oil on the gasket of the filter I'm about to install. Been doing it for over 20 years and have never had on separate. Not sure if that's really a secret, or not.

Some seem to expect a lot from a $2+ oil filter. It's not supposed to be a world beater. Just an OEM equivalent. I get a kick out of these clowns who saw apart filters and offer their unbiased opinions about the filter's construction, its quality versus another, etc. Give someone a camera and a hacksaw and they think they're an expert.

I started the thread just to mention the breakaway gasket. That is not a rare event on oil filters. When Honda first introduced a new CRV model a few experienced a burning oil smell after an oil change. It was happening occasionally because the gasket from the old filter would breakaway and remain on the engine. Then, when the new filter was mounted there were two gaskets sandwiched together and a small leak would often result allowing oil to fall down on some hot exhaust component. If the leak was bad enough a fire might occur.

One thing I've noticed on the few auto filters I've installed on my FJR is just when you think all the filter dimensions are equivalent and adequate for FJR use you recognize a potential problem -- will the threaded portion of the filter allow the filter to be pulled up adequately tight to the FJR engine? The centerline distance from the gasket surface to where the filter's threaded metal begins seems to vary a bit. If that dimension is much smaller than a Yamaha filter the auto filter may never tighten enough to develop a good gasket seal -- it uses up all the threads on the steel union connector on the FJR.

+ 1...not a problem at all. Just don't install without it. <_<

"Give someone a camera and a hacksaw and they think they're an expert."

Geeze dude, don't blow a filter gasket. :p

WalMart is always looking at its bottom line, so a cheapening up of their SuperTech line wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I wasn't taking a stab at your choice of filter, it's just an observation by someone more motivated than myself.

I read a simular thread at another forum, but it said the filters were made in South America.

Dunno, but I now open the box and look at the filter before buying it. So far, all the ones I have picked up said Made in the USA.

And I would add that I would have no issue using a filter made in any other country , as long as there were no reported problems with it.

Yep, in a global marketplace it gets to be a little bit of a problem: BMWs are made in China, Triumphs are made in Thailand, etc.

I guess, if you were determined to have USA? -- you'd have to have a Harley-Davidson, a Polaris Victory, or an Indian (and I'm not too sure about any of them...?)?

Suspension, electrics, fuel systems mostly made in Japan. I've heard that some of the engine castings are made in Mexico and shipped to the US. So no joy there either. Can't think of any American company that is truly all US. Hell find me even foreign cars that are fully made and assembled in their country of origin. Japan might come the closest I think their stickers say something like 96 percent Japanese content.
