Pretty close, But I think your avatar would win me over.I'm assuming these HID lamps are better than sex, please correct me if I'm wrong. :dribble:
Paul I was lucky enough to get the last set from Bruno. Bruno says he will produce a taiwan knock off of the G4. Will see ,give hima call. The old eyes just aren't what they used to be. Looking for a set of Philips 4G HID driving lights as seen here.
Thanks.
Thanks for the info Peter. Will do.Paul I was lucky enough to get the last set from Bruno. Bruno says he will produce a taiwan knock off of the G4. Will see ,give hima call.
That's cute - this guy will produce a Taiwanese knock-off of a Chinese light assembly. Go figure.Paul I was lucky enough to get the last set from Bruno. Bruno says he will produce a taiwan knock off of the G4. Will see ,give hima call.
So, I just heard back from Bruno. No guarantees, but if you've been wanting a set, Christmas might be a little brighter this year. Said to hang tough for a couple of months.Paul I was lucky enough to get the last set from Bruno. Bruno says he will produce a taiwan knock off of the G4. Will see ,give hima call.
Maybe the light assembly does come from China, but bulb and ballast were German made Philips. Here's Bruno's email to meThat's cute - this guy will produce a Taiwanese knock-off of a Chinese light assembly. Go figure.
The issues relate to the optics, case quality and such in the original 'PHID' design - It's always made me giggle to hear that this was promoted as a 'Philips' HID. In the industry no one refers to their lights by the name of the provider of the guts (though they will likely refer to the supplier in their advertising), and, not to belabor the point I'd wager that no one ever asked Philips if they could use their trademark in the product name. When they were designed, the Chinese had yet to start producing their ballasts and bulbs in quantity and the major providers were Hella and Philips so providers realisitically had no choice but to spring the almost $300 for the active components in the lights.Maybe the light assembly does come from China, but bulb and ballast were German made Philips. the 4G has always been assembled in Taiwan with German made HID components from Philips. I am considering bringing it back with with our GE bulb and Taiwan made ballast which is as good as the Philips version to make this product more viable to stock. The Philips bulb and ballast are so expensive and have huge minimum orders. Stay tuned in the next couple of months.
I would say that it was a draw. Both the Hella and PHID are insanely bright. I would not hesitate to run the Hella light when my PHIDS die.At SW-FOG in New Mexico Adam (GalaxyBlue) and I squared off in an aux HID light pissing match. He with a set of PHID's, me with the Hella Micro DE's.
Even though were only a few feet apart, my beam pattern was blocked by a trailer at the end of parking lot, his weren't. So the results of this highly scientific test are all moot. But what was readily apparent was that the Hella beam pattern was more tightly focused, whereas the PHID were spread out quite a bit more. I'll leave it to Galaxyblue and ScooterG (who was the instigator naturally) to comment on which one they preferred.
All that being said, we (Huron52/FJRob1300) rode 700 miles the day before and pulled into the Kachina Inn at close to midnight. We came in through the road through mtns' that seemed to be under constant construction. Not good, at night and being dead tired. I led with the Hella's, followed by Rob riding my lights, with Huron taking the sweep position with his Solteks. Hurons Solteks: One driving light (not pencil beam) the other a flood to fill in the corners.
My Hella's lit up a bunch of, what I believe were bears, but probably antelope or deer, crossing the road well ahead of us. No drama. Unfortunately we met an oncoming car in a blind corner and when I went to flip off the Hella's I missed. Sorry buddy! He went by and all I heard was a horn and the sound of gravel. Ooops.
Riding around locally quite often a vehicle will catch up to me and NOT pass. The only reason I can see for this is the incredible amount of light that Hella's can spew.
I've also tried using them during the day as running lights. Its a no go. I get a bunch of oncoming cars flipping their lights at me.
Long story short. I love my Hella's.
I suspect this is the product Bruno referred to above. The reflector is 10mm smaller than the 4G. It also appears there was no cost savings switching from Philips to GE components.Maybe the light assembly does come from China, but bulb and ballast were German made Philips.
