OHFJR Rack with Helmet Guardian

Added a Helmet Guardian ($44) at cycle gadgets Clicky

but -- didn't use the tag mount -- mounted to OHFJR's rack.

Step 1 Re-Key to use the FJR ignition key -- search, and you'll find Fred H. post on how to re-key the cylinders to work with your FJR ignition key (took about 10 minutes -- one caution -- the locking retainer has a tendency to jump out when you remove the cyliner! very difficult to find in a messy garage)

Step 2 -- use a piece of 1" angle (i used 1/8" thick aluminum, steel would work also) about 8.75" in length.

Match drill to both racks.

Step 3 -- Bolt on! (of course -- I had to irridite and paint first)

Close up of the mounting hardware (6M 25mm length socket head cap screw from underneath through the bracket - rack, and givi mount) 1/4-20 to mount the Helmet Guardian to the bracket)



Rear View: (note -- no problem with getting near the hot exhaust)



Side view: (note: no problem with the helmet touching the dirty rear fender or tire -- just hangs there in free space)

[SIZE=12pt]one word of caution: in the picture with[/SIZE]

"Push the gold colored spring loaded cylinder latch down with a small screwdriver so you can push the cylinder out the front"

Make sure you keep your hand on the cylinder covering the gold locking latch as it comes out the front of the lock -- it is spring loaded and can shoot very far across your garage, and is very difficult to find (or it was for me) even more difficult to find is the tiny spring that shot it out of the cylinder!

I have that same Cortech tail bag and I struggled all last trip trying to keep it on the OEM "rack". Even with bungee buddies, it's a pain and kept slipping forward onto my back seat.

This rack looks like the perfect solution.

Two questions:

1) I've noticed several pictures of this bag in this thread and all show it mounted backwards. Why do you do that? Does it not fit on the rack facing forward?

2) The bag came with 4 bungee straps with hooks and 4 webbed straps with male fastex buckles. Where do you get the straps with the female fastex buckles to hold it to the rack? I would like that better than using the bungee hooks.

I do that so it's easier to get into it from the back (just the orientation of the zipper) and could fit either way.

couldn't find fastex females -- so a quick trip to wal-mart camping area -- straps were about $1.95 each (one pack has a male and female -- just replaced them. BTW -- says rated for 50# each -- so it should be and has proven to be just fine.
